[BME602]
1. What are materials? List eight commonly encountered engineering materials.
2. What are the main classes of engineering materials?
3. Define mechanical properties of engineering materials in elastic and plastic region
4. Give broad classification of ferrous materials
5. Explain with a neat sketch iron carbon equilibrium diagram and write invariant reactions
6. Classify different types of pain carbon steels and cast irons and mention their applications
7. What are standards and codes
8. Explain different types of manufacturing processes
9. A round bar with stepped portion is subjected to the forces as shown in Figure Q3. Determine the magnitude of
force P, such that net deformation in the bar not exceed 1 mm. E for steel is 200 GPa and that of aluminium is
70 GPa. Big end diameter and small end diameter of the tapering bar are 40 mm and 12.5 mm respectively
10. Draw SFD and BMD for the beam shown in Figure Q2. Also locate the point of contraflexure if any
11. A point in strained material is subjected to a loading as shown in the Figure Q6,. Determine (i) Normal stress,
shear stress and resultant stress on an oblique plane inclined at an angle 45˚ to the axis of minor tensile stress.
Also find major principal stress, minor principal stress and their location, maximum shear stress and its location.
12. Figure shows a T-section of dimensions 10x10x2 cm. determine the moment of inertia of the section about the
horizontal and vertical axes, passing through the centre of gravity of the section.
13. Find the moment of inertia of the section shown in figure about the centroidal axis X-X perpendicular to the web.
14. A hallow shaft having internal diameter 40% of its external diameter, transmits 562.5 kW power at 100rpm. Determine
the internal and external diameters of the shaft if shear stress is not to exceed 60 N/mm 2 and the twist in a length of
2.5 m should not exceed 1.3 degree. The maximum torque being 25% greater than mean. Modulus of rigidity = 9 x
104 N/mm2.
15. Compare the weight, strength and stiffness of hallow shaft of same external diameter as that of solid shaft. The inner
diameter of hallow shaft is half the external diameter. Both the shaft have the same material and length.
