Task 1: Read Helen’s email about her hobbies to a pen-pal club website and then fill in

Dear Pen-pal,
My name is Helen and I’m looking for a new pen-pal that I can write about my hobbies. I’m
11 years old and I live in London. There are five people in my family and I have one elder
brother and one younger sister.
I like to be active and I have a lot of different hobbies. In my free time, I really enjoy playing
chess, going to the theatre, doing crosswords and playing the guitar. I’m also interested in
watersports like water skiing and windsurfing. I’m poor at doing them but I try to practice
them when I’m on holiday, so I hope I will be a really good windsurfer or water-skier one
day. I also try to watch all the competitions on EuroSport.
I love water sports but my favorite hobby is actually a winter one. In winter time, I usually
practice about two hours after school three times a week; Monday, Wednesday and Friday
and two hours at the weekend. I started doing it when I was 6 years old after I got a pair of
red ice skates as a birthday present, so I’ve been ice skating for five years.
To do this sport, all you need is a pair of ice skates, comfortable clothes and of course an ice
skating ring! I’m lucky because there is one close to my house and it is not very expensive.
However, it is quite a dangerous sport. When you fall down badly, you can easily break your
leg or arm. I love ice-skating because it is very exciting and fun. I recommend it to
everybody who loves difficult but challenging sports.

My hobbies
Hello! My name is Amanda and I live in Portugal. I live in a little coastal village. I love the
sea and I think that I couldn’t live in a big city without the sea around me. I live with my
parents and my little sister. She is thirteen and I am fourteen. My mum’s name is Maria and
my father’s name is Goncalo. My parents are both P.E. teachers. I practice sport every day
since my parents always practice it. I get up in the morning at 6:30 and go to the swimming
pool to practice. I belong to the swimming school team. Then I go home and wake my sister
up. We have a big breakfast and then we go to school. At half past one we go home and have
lunch. I do my homework and then go to the sports center because I also practice baseball. I
love it. I could say it is my favorite sport. After that I go home, watch some TV or play with
my sister and then we all go to bed to get up early the following day. I also like going out
with my friends. We often go to the cinema at the weekend or go to any of our friends’
houses to play with the computer or chat with other friends. We also like going to the beach
and playing volleyball or doing swimming competitions, of course I am the best member. I
am the only one who is a professional that’s the reason.
