Examples on migration
● Between 2006 and 2010, Syria experienced the worst drought,
Hundreds of thousands of farming families were reduced to poverty,
75% of families that depended on agriculture suffered total crop failure
causing a mass migration of rural people to urban shantytowns
● During the Syrian civil war when the situation escalated and troops and
tanks entered cities like Jisr al-Shugūr many refugees fled to turkey
● In Afghanistan, during the return of the Taliban in 2021, many people
desperately attempted to flee the country. Images of individuals clinging
to aircraft during evacuation efforts by countries such as the United
Kingdom highlighted the urgency and fear faced by those trying to
escape persecution.
● In Turkmenistan, Human Rights Watch reported in 2021 that
government authorities physically harassed Muslims and accused them
of “following their … faith too closely.” Police detained groups of men
and forced them to shave their beards and drink alcohol to demonstrate
that they were not “extremists,” according to the U.S. Commission on
International Religious Freedom.
● Jakarta is largely(40%”) below sea level and has an insufficient
drainage system bcs of which it experiences flooding often during rainy
seas
● The Tohoku earthquake and tsunami in 2011 caused deaths of nearly
18000 and caused widespread destruction leaving thousands displaced
● In jan 2010 a deadly earthquake hit haiti claiming lives of over 90000
people and displacing over 1.5 million [Link] humanitarian aid
many suffered from diseases and a lack of proper shelter and basic
supplies
Reasons for migration
Religious persecutions
- often face discrimination, social exclusion and insecurity – leading to
isolation and decline in mental well being hence pushing them to leave the
country
- in some countries practising certain religions is strictly prohibited and could
lead to punishments ranging from imprisonment to execution hence out of fear
for their lives people migrate
Better standard of living
- people migrate from poorer countries to more developed ones in search of
better and high paying jobs so they can better support their families
- for high quality education to open more career paths for them
- to escape unemployment in overpopulated countries like pakistan and india
where there is a skill mismatch and more competition
- to get better and free healthcare, safe housing, clean water and reliable
electricity
Environmental problems
- due to global warming, rising sea level and melting of glacier more natural
disasters have been occuring
- people lose their homes, jobs and savings in such calamities causing mental
stress and trauma
- with entire towns ruined people no longer have ways to provide for
themselves and incase aid get delayed there are high chances of diseases
spreading
Political factors
- Ongoing wars destroy homes, infrastructure, and entire communities. People flee to
escape violence and death.
- Frequent changes in government, weak leadership, or corruption create
uncertainty. This discourages investment, reduces jobs, and makes daily life unsafe.
- lack of freedom of speech and expression
