FIELD METHODS IN PSYCHOLOGY (Psych 118)

This course is about different methods of science that study people’s behaviors in the field (ie., spatial-
physical, spatial-temporal, socio-cultural, digital). It encompasses quantitative, qualitative, and mixed
research approaches. Specific methods to be discussed range from systematic observation to evaluative
research. Issues related to research like validity, reliability, relevance, and ethics will be highlighted.

At the end of this subject, you are expected to

1. have a comprehensive knowledge of scientific methods of data collection in the field;


2. apply this knowledge to conduct your own studies;
3. assess critically research claims in mass media, social media, and in academic journals; and
4. be conscious of ethical considerations in conducting research and in evaluating research claims.
