Ada Lovelace was a mathematician and writer who is often considered the world’s first computer
programmer. She was born in 1815 in London, England. Her father was the famous poet Lord Byron, but Ada
was raised mostly by her mother, who encouraged her to study math and science, which was unusual for
girls at the time.

Ada’s most important work was with Charles Babbage, a scientist and inventor. He created plans for a
machine called the Analytical Engine, an early version of a computer. Ada translated an article about the
machine and added her own notes, which were longer than the original article! In her notes, she described
how the machine could follow a set of instructions, or what we now call a computer program.

Even though the Analytical Engine was never built, Ada’s work showed that machines could do more than just
math—they could follow code and process information. Her ideas were way ahead of her time. Today, many
people celebrate Ada Lovelace Day to honor her contributions to computer science.
