LESSON 1- DEVELOPING A BUSINESS PLAN

Business Plan- A formal statement of a set of business goals, the reasons why
they are believe attainable,and the plan for reaching these goals. A business plan is
a formal document that outlines an organization's goals, strategies, target market,
financial projections, and operational plans. It serves as a roadmap for starting,
managing, or growing a business and is often used to attract investors or secure
funding.

Categories of a Business Plan

1. Business Plan for Profit- typically focuses on financial goals

2. Marketing Plan- targets changes in perception and branding as its primary goals

3. Project Plan- describes the goals of a particular project

4. Business Plan for Non-profit and Government Agency- tends to focus on service
goals

5. Operational Plans- describes the goals of an internal organization, working group


or department

Factors to Consider for a New Entrepreneur

Basic Phases of a Business Plan

Marketing and Distribution Strategy-shall deal with product demand analysis. It


should show the competitive product advantage over existing product or service
and designing the marketing program of the enterprise.

Production and Technology Study-refer to the need in making the product or


service. This refers to the machineries, plant location, and other technical aspect in
making of the product.

Financial Management-refers to the capital investment and sources of funding the


operation of the business.

General Format/ Content of a Business Plan

1. Introduction-The introduction contains the rationale and the background of the


study undertaken. It should include the importance of the project and the
proponent’s background and their desire to establish the business.

2. Project Summary- It narrates the project conceptualization, and details the events
that led to the study. It also presents the project proponents, the proposed names
of the business, the type of business proposal/project, and the project location.

3. Management and Personnel Components-This part describes the plan to grow or


scale the business. This often involves hiring staff and staff often represent the
single largest ongoing expense that a company will have. As such, it is important to
plan exactly who will be hired, how much they will be paid and when staff will join
the team.

The personnel section of a business plan should contain the following components.

 Job Descriptions – The job descriptions should provide the reader with enough
detail so that they understand the job function of prospective hires

 Organizational Chart – An organizational chart show who will work for who and
allows a reader to get an overview of the overall management and staffing
structure of the company.
