Networking

Computer networking involves connecting multiple computers to share information and resources electronically. Key features include performance, reliability, security, and scalability, while uses range from data sharing to improving efficiency. Different types of networks include LAN (local area network), MAN (metropolitan area network), and WAN (wide area network), each with distinct characteristics and coverage areas.

Computer Networking

 Computer network, two or more computers that are connected with one another
for the purpose of communicating data electronically.
 A computer network is a system in which multiple computers are connected to
each other to share information and resources.

Features of computer network

 Performance
 Data Sharing
 Reliability
 Security
 Backup
 Scalability
 Software and hardware compatibility
Uses of Computer Networking:

 Source of information
 Faster way of communication
 Education medium
 Sharing Hardware
 Sharing Software
 Sharing of information/files/data
 Increase in efficiency
 Improving storage efficiency and volume

Types of Computer Networking

LAN
 A local area network (LAN) is a collection of devices connected together in one
physical location, such as a building, office, or home.
 A LAN can be small or large, ranging from a home network with one user to an
enterprise network with thousands of users and devices in an office or school.

Features of LAN

 Limited distance within a few miles

 High data transfer rate 2 to 100 Mbps.
 Low error rate
 Good response time
 Private Owned
 Shared hardware, Software, and data files
 Cost of setting up the network is usually low
MAN
 A Metropolitan Area Network (MAN) is a type of computer network that spans over a
metropolitan area, typically a city.
 It provides high-speed data communication services such as video, audio, and data
transfer between multiple LANs (Local Area Networks) and WANs (Wide Area
Networks).
 The main purpose of a MAN is to connect different LANs in a city to share resources and
exchange data, as well as to provide internet access to users.

Features of MAN

 It can covers the area which ranges from 5 to 50 km, which is capable of carrying from a
group of buildings to the whole city.
 In MAN, data rates are moderate to high.
 In MAN, mostly used medium is optical fibers which results in high-speed connectivity.
 MAN networks provides high reliability because the error rate in this network is very
less.
 A MAN network can use a variety of access technologies, such as wireless, fiber-optic, or
copper-based connections, to provide connectivity to different devices and networks.

Wide Area Network (WAN)

 A wide-area (WAN) network is a communication network that typically covers a
large geographical area, primarily used for connecting computers. Cities, states, or
even countries can be connected with WANs.
 WANs are commonly used by larger businesses or organizations and are used by
businesses in a broader variety of sectors with networks in many places.

Features of WAN

 Large geographical area

 Connects a large number of computers connected over a large geographical area.
 WAN provides connecting links between LAN and MAN to the network.
 Many users can connect and communicate with each other to share data and
information in one network.
 The speed of the data transmission is sometimes fast and sometimes slow.
 The data rate of WAN is low compared to the data transfer rate of the local area
network.
