Algebra 2 Complete Study Guide

1. Functions
• Function: relation where each input has exactly one output.
• Domain: all possible x-values. Range: all possible y-values.
• Notation: f(x) = ...
• Key transformations: f(x)+k (up), f(x)-k (down), f(x-h) (right), f(x+h) (left).

2. Linear Equations
• Slope formula: m = (y2 − y1) / (x2 − x1)
• Slope■intercept form: y = mx + b
• Point■slope form: y − y1 = m(x − x1)
• Parallel lines: same slope. Perpendicular lines: negative reciprocal slopes.

3. Quadratic Functions
• Standard form: ax² + bx + c
• Vertex form: a(x − h)² + k
• Quadratic formula: x = (-b ± √(b² − 4ac)) / 2a
• Discriminant: b² − 4ac (determines number of solutions).

4. Polynomials
• Degree = highest exponent.
• End behavior determined by leading coefficient and degree.
• Factoring methods: GCF, grouping, difference of squares, trinomial factoring.

5. Rational Expressions
• Rational function: ratio of polynomials.
• Vertical asymptotes: denominator = 0.
• Holes occur when factors cancel.

6. Radical Expressions
• Simplify radicals: √(ab) = √a √b
• Rationalizing denominators removes radicals from denominators.

7. Exponential Functions
• Form: f(x) = a(b^x)
• Growth if b > 1, decay if 0 < b < 1.
• Common models: compound interest, population growth.

8. Logarithms
• log_b(a) = c means b^c = a
• Product rule: log(ab) = log a + log b
• Quotient rule: log(a/b) = log a − log b
• Power rule: log(a^n) = n log a

9. Sequences & Series

• Arithmetic: a_n = a1 + (n−1)d
• Geometric: a_n = a1 r^(n−1)
• Geometric sum: S = a1(1 − r^n) / (1 − r)

10. Matrices
• Used to solve systems of equations.
• Matrix multiplication: row × column.

11. Conic Sections

• Circle: (x − h)² + (y − k)² = r²
• Parabola: y = a(x − h)² + k
• Ellipse and hyperbola involve two axes.

12. Probability
• Probability = favorable outcomes / total outcomes.
• Independent events: multiply probabilities.
• Conditional probability: P(A|B) = P(A and B) / P(B).
