Chapter 4 - Project-Based Learning

Project-based learning (PBL) is a teaching method where students engage in real-world problems through meaningful projects that enhance critical thinking, collaboration, and creativity. The GRASPS framework organizes project assessments around goals, roles, audience, situations, products, and standards. Authentic assessment in PBL includes observation, performance samples, and actual performance to evaluate student achievement and improvement.

Project-based learning

•a teaching method in which students actively

explore real-world problems and challenges over
an extended period. Instead of traditional
lectures and memorization, students gain
knowledge and skills by working on meaningful
projects that require critical thinking, creativity,
collaboration, and communication.
Key Features of PBL:
[Link]-World Relevance – Projects are based on real-life issues,
making learning more engaging and meaningful.
[Link]-Based Approach – Students ask questions, conduct
research, and develop solutions.
[Link] – Students work in teams, improving teamwork and
problem-solving skills.
[Link]-Centered – Learning is driven by students' interests and
choices, promoting independence.
[Link] Learning – PBL integrates multiple subjects like
science, math, and language arts.
[Link] and Feedback – Students regularly assess their work and
make improvements based on feedback.
GRASPS FRAMEWORK
GRASPS FRAMEWORK
• a model for demonstrating performance of understanding
using authentic assessments. It is one of many performance
of understanding models, but is ideally suited to the kind of
project-based inquiries we do in design. GRASPS represent a
framework for organizing, delivering, and assessing a
project-based assessment. The assessment associated with
the inquiry is structured around the following expectations
and goals.
•Goal: A definition of the problem or goal
•Role: Define the role of the student
•Audience: Identify the target audience
•Situation: This is the context or scenario of the goal
•Product: What is created and why it will be created
•Standards: Rubrics or success criteria
Three Modes Of Authentic Assessment

• 1. Observation-this includes the date and information that the

teacher collects from daily work.
• The teacher will conduct an observation to the students. He/she will
observe tge performance and the attitude of the student during and
after the class. After the observation, the teacher can be able to
identify the weakness and the strength of the students. The role of
the teacher is to assess the students and to help the students
improve themselves into a better one.
2. Performance sample- tangible results that
demonstrate student achievement.
•In this mode the teacher will assess the students
performance or the product. The teacher will let
the students pass a portfolio after the semester
or year. In this condition, the teacher can
determine if the student's performance is
developing.
3. Actual Performance- tests and measures
students' performance at a specific place and
time.
•The teacher can asses the students by
conducting actual performance such as singing,
dancing and acting. By that the teacher can
determine the behavior of the students during
the performance.
