1. Uniform Roof Snow Load, Monoslope Roof

Determine the uniform design roof load for an emergency vehicle storage
garage located in suburban Cleveland, Ohio. The interior temperature in the
winter is kept at about 38 oF to avoid frozen water pipe damage. The garage is
located on a relatively open site about 30 ft from a taller municipal building
that serves as an obstruction (i.e., the municipal building roof is at least 3 ft
taller than the garage’s). The garage has a monoslope roof with slope of 1 on
12 as shown below.

2. Wind Pressure on Roof Joists

The steel framed factory shown below is located in a suburban area 25 miles
inland from the coast of Southern California. The factory meets the requirements
of a simple diaphragm building and may be considered a closed structure. The
building is not sensitive to dynamic effects, and it is not located on a site at which
channeling or buffeting occurs. The roof framing consists of open joists spaced at
5 ft centers that span 20 ft parallel to the long side of the building. For wind
flowing normal to the 80 ft side of the building, determine the ASD design wind
load acting on a roof joist in interior zone 1.

6. AASHTO Moving Load

According to AASHTO Bridge Design Specifications,

A 2-lane bridge is proposed for the crossing of a 125’-0” span over the Columbia
River spanning between Washington and Oregon. The area of the crossing is in a
sensitive environmental area, which would preclude the use of an intermediate
pier. Thus, for a simple span consideration, the municipality in question has an
existing truss span from a previously decommissioned site that may be used.
However, the maximum midspan moment must be determined for the current
AASHTO loading. The following information is provided: The dead load weight
per lane of the existing bridge is 8.7 kip/ft. What is the service level design
moment at midspan?

A) 41,800 kip*ft
B) 20,900 kip*ft
C) 24,800 kip*ft
D) 37,900 kip*ft

Bulb-Tee sections with a cast-in-place normal weight deck. The deck thickness is
8” which includes a ½” thick non structural wearing surface. The design also
provides for a future wearing surface load of 35 psf. The beams are spaced at 8’-
