Foundation Engineering 3rd Report - Design Assignments

1) Shallow Foundation Design
Design a raft foundation for the building given in the project by considering the soil conditions and
structural loads.
Load per storey
Building Code Dimensions of each building Properties
(kPa)
B1 2B+G+14F 13
B2 17.0m x 14.0m 2B+G+13F 13
B3 Interaction between the 1B+G+12F 14
adjacent buildings will be
B4 ignored! 1B+G+12F 14
B5 1B+G+13F 13

Check the total and differential consolidation settlements, and the bearing capacity of the
foundation.
Bearing Capacity
Calculate the allowable bearing capacity by using both Meyerhof’s and Terzaghi’s equations.
Terzaghi

Settlements
Calculate the consolidation settlement at the corners and center of the building. Compare your
findings with settlement limits.

You can use the table below to find the stress increase as a result of a uniformly loaded rectangular
area.

2) Deep Foundation Design

Design a piled deep foundation system for your building using the proper static pile formulas
depending on your soil profile. Decide on the pile length, diameter, center-to-center pile spacing,
and required number of piles. (Available pile diameters, D: 0.65m, 0.80m, 1.00m, 1.20m, 1.50 m.)
Plot a scaled drawing of the pile layout.
