MODULE 6
Learning Objectives
At the end of this module, the students should be able to:
a. Discuss the role of children in a marriage;
b. Identify the responsibility of parents;
c. Explain the underlying rationale for planned parenthood; and
d. State common justification for planned parenthood.
CHILDREN
Children are blessing that bring joy and pride to parents. They may fulfil
a marriage, perfect the personality of parents, enrich marital love, or confer
status on the family. Various cultures look at children differently. They may be viewed
as a continuation of the family line, or a mean of ensuring that family members and
ancestors are honored. In rural Philippines, children are usually viewed as investment
potential, securing their parents against economic, physical, and psychological hardship
in old age. Conversely, children may be liabilities.
Thus, children may be welcomed or simply accepted as part of adulthood or
marriage. in either case, they should be planned for, cared for, and given the best
possible future parents can provide. They are not mere objects of ownership.
PLANNED PARENTHOOD
Responsible parenthood is a privilege and obligation exercised by married
couples to deliberately and generously decide to raise a large family or, for different
reasons and motives and with due respect for the moral law, to avoid a new birth for an
indeterminate period. It involves the issue of when and how many children to have.
Planned parenthood is not about avoiding fertility, but rather about maintaining
fertility until the person can choose the right time for assuming the responsibility of
being a parent. Spacing or limiting the number of births may promote a woman’s health
and well-being, as well as improve future pregnancy outcomes. Common justification for
planned parenthood includes danger to the mother’s or child’s health and life, eugenic
hereditary defects, and socio-economic difficulties.
Children are blessings that should be welcomed. Health problems and specific
family circumstances, however, may prompt parents not to have children at a
particular point in time. Delaying, limiting, or spacing the number of children is
referred to as planned parenthood.

MODULE 6
Module Assessment
Name: _______________________________ Score: _________________
Section: ______________________ Date: ____________
Briefly answer the following.
1. Explain why people opt to have children.
People have children because they are blessings that bring joy, pride, and
fulfillment to a marriage. Children can enrich marital love, perfect the parents’
personalities, continue the family line, honor ancestors, and in some cultures,
provide economic or social security for parents in old age.
2. Discuss how both parents can ensure that children have the best possible future.
Parents can ensure a bright future for their children by planning for their birth,
providing proper care, education, and guidance, and offering emotional, financial,
and moral support. They should treat children as individuals with rights and needs,
rather than as possessions, and prepare them to become responsible and well-
adjusted adults.
3. State the importance of planned parenthood.
Planned parenthood allows couples to decide when and how many children to have
responsibly. It helps maintain maternal health, improves pregnancy outcomes, and
ensures that children are born into circumstances where they can be properly cared
for and supported.
4. List other common justifications for planned parenthood.
Danger to the mother’s health or life
Risk to the child’s health or life
Hereditary defects (genetic concerns)
Socio-economic difficulties, such as financial instability or lack of resources
5. Explain why children can also be considered liabilities.
Children can be considered liabilities if they create economic, physical, or
psychological burdens on the parents. Raising children requires time, effort, and
resources, which can be challenging if parents are unprepared or face health,
financial, or social constraints.
