METHOD STATEMENT

APPLICATION OF PERLITE EXTERNAL PLASTER MORTAR

(THERMAL INSULATION PLASTER)

1. PURPOSE

This method statement provides a detailed and controlled procedure for the proper application of
Perlite External Plaster Mortar to achieve the required thermal insulation, durability, adhesion, and
surface finish. It ensures that all activities are executed in compliance with project specifications,
relevant standards, and best engineering practices, while minimizing defects such as cracking,
debonding, and shrinkage.

2. SCOPE

This procedure covers all stages of work including material delivery, storage, surface preparation,
mixing, application, curing, inspection, and final acceptance for external plaster works.
It applies to:

External facades

Structural and non-structural substrates (concrete, blockwork, AAC)

Areas requiring thermal insulation and lightweight plaster

Exclusions:

Decorative finishes unless specified

Internal plaster unless approved

3. REFERENCES

Project Specifications and Particular Specifications

Approved Material Submittal and Technical Data Sheet

TS EN 998-1 (Category T1 – Lightweight Insulating Plaster)

ASTM C926 / C1063 (as applicable for plastering works)

Manufacturer’s application guidelines

4. MATERIAL

4.1 Main Material

Pre-mixed Perlite External Plaster Mortar supplied in 20 kg moisture-resistant bags

4.2 Properties (Engineering Considerations)

Lightweight density reduces dead load on structure

Low thermal conductivity improves building energy efficiency

High vapor permeability allows breathability and reduces moisture trapping

4.3 Water

Clean, potable water free from salts, oils, and contaminants

Temperature of water preferably between 10°C–25°C

5. TOOLS & EQUIPMENT

Electric low-speed mixer (300–600 rpm to avoid air entrainment)

Plaster spray machine (for large-scale applications)

Steel trowels for finishing

Aluminum screeds for leveling

Measuring buckets (calibrated for water control)

Scaffolding system compliant with safety standards

Thickness gauges and spirit levels

6. STORAGE & HANDLING

Store on wooden pallets, minimum 150 mm above ground

Stack bags not exceeding manufacturer recommendations (typically ≤10 bags height)

Protect from:

Rainwater ingress

o
o

Ground moisture

o
o

Direct sunlight

First-In-First-Out (FIFO) system shall be applied

Any bag showing lump formation or hydration shall be rejected

7. SURFACE PREPARATION

7.1 General Requirements

Surface preparation is critical to ensure proper bonding and long-term performance.

7.2 Cleaning

Remove all contaminants such as:

Dust and laitance

o
o

Oil, grease, curing compounds

o
o

Paints or coatings

Cleaning methods may include:

Wire brushing

o
o

Air blowing

o
o

Light mechanical abrasion

7.3 Repairs

Fill cracks using approved repair mortar

Repair honeycombing and voids

Ensure substrate achieves required compressive integrity

7.4 Surface Conditioning

Highly absorbent surfaces:

Pre-wet to Saturated Surface Dry (SSD) condition

Smooth concrete:

Apply bonding agent or roughening (mechanical keying)

Ensure minimum 24 hours curing of primer before plastering

7.5 Substrate Acceptance Criteria

Surface tolerance: ±5 mm over 2 m straight edge

No loose or friable material

Adequate mechanical key present

8. MIXING PROCEDURE

8.1 Proportioning

Strictly maintain:

14–15 liters of water per 20 kg bag

8.2 Mixing Process

Add water first, then dry material gradually

Mix using low-speed mixer:

5 minutes initial mixing

o
o

3 minutes rest (hydration phase)

o
o

2 minutes final mixing

8.3 Quality of Mix

Uniform consistency

No lumps or segregation

Workable but not overly fluid

8.4 Prohibited Practices

Re-tempering (adding water after initial set) is strictly prohibited

Do not mix partial bags to avoid inconsistency

No additives or cement addition allowed

9. APPLICATION PROCEDURE

9.1 General

Application shall be continuous to avoid cold joints

Work shall proceed in panels defined by expansion joints or architectural breaks

9.2 Layer Thickness

Single coat thickness: 10–30 mm

For thicker applications:

o
Apply in multiple layers

o
o

Allow intermediate setting between coats

9.3 Application Method

Apply mortar using:

Hand troweling OR

o
o

Mechanical spraying

Compact well against substrate to ensure bonding

Level using screed guides

Finish using float or steel trowel depending on required texture

9.4 Reinforcement

Install fiberglass mesh at:

Junctions of different materials

o
o

Openings (doors/windows corners)

o
o

Crack-prone zones

9.5 Joint Treatment

Respect movement joints and do not bridge them

Install control joints as per design

10. WORKING TIME CONTROL

Pot life: Maximum 2 hours

Rejected if:

Initial setting has begun

o
o

Loss of workability observed

Plan mixing batches according to workforce capacity

11. CURING PROCEDURE

11.1 Importance

Proper curing prevents:

Plastic shrinkage cracks

Rapid moisture loss

Weak surface formation

11.2 Method

Light water spraying:

Twice daily (morning and evening)

Duration:

Minimum 3 days

11.3 Protection

Cover with:

Hessian cloth or shading nets if required

Protect from:

Avoid application during:

Rain or expected rainfall within 24 hours

o
o

Strong winds (>25 km/h)
