Human Reproduction – Detailed Notes
HUMAN REPRODUCTION – DETAILED NOTES
1. INTRODUCTION
Human reproduction is a sexual mode of reproduction involving male and female reproductive
systems. It includes gametogenesis, fertilization, pregnancy, embryonic development, parturition,
and lactation.
2. MALE REPRODUCTIVE SYSTEM
• Includes testes, epididymis, vas deferens, seminal vesicles, prostate gland, urethra, and penis.
• Testes produce sperm and testosterone.
• Seminiferous tubules contain Sertoli cells (support) and Leydig cells (hormone secretion).
• Accessory glands add seminal fluid.
• Scrotum maintains temperature 2–2.5°C lower for sperm production.
Functions:
1. Production of sperm (spermatogenesis)
2. Secretion of testosterone
3. Transport of sperm through ducts
4. Semen formation
3. SPERMATOGENESIS
• Process of sperm formation in seminiferous tubules.
• Begins at puberty.
• Steps:
- Spermatogonia (2n)
- Primary spermatocytes
- Secondary spermatocytes
- Spermatids
- Spermatozoa (spermiogenesis)
• Hormonal control: GnRH → LH → testosterone & FSH → Sertoli cells.
4. SPERM STRUCTURE
• Head: nucleus + acrosome
• Middle piece: mitochondria
• Tail: movement
5. FEMALE REPRODUCTIVE SYSTEM
• Includes ovaries, fallopian tubes, uterus, cervix, vagina, external genitalia, and mammary glands.
• Ovaries produce ova and hormones (estrogen, progesterone).
• Uterus: implantation site.
• Fallopian tubes: fertilization site.
6. OOGENESIS
• Starts before birth, pauses at prophase I.
• Puberty: meiosis continues.
• Produces one ovum + polar bodies.
7. MENSTRUAL CYCLE
• 28-day cycle.
• Phases:
1. Menstrual phase
2. Follicular phase (FSH)
3. Ovulation (LH surge)
4. Luteal phase (progesterone)
8. FERTILIZATION
• Occurs in ampulla of fallopian tube.
• Steps:
- Sperm capacitation
- Acrosomal reaction
- Fusion of gametes
- Zygote formation
9. IMPLANTATION
• Blastocyst attaches to endometrium.
• Occurs on day 6–7 after fertilization.
10. PREGNANCY
• Involves embryonic and fetal development.
• Placenta forms: exchange of gases, nutrients, hormones.
• Hormones: hCG, estrogen, progesterone.
11. EMBRYONIC DEVELOPMENT
• Cleavage → Morula → Blastocyst.
• Gastrulation → ectoderm, mesoderm, endoderm.
• Organogenesis follows.
12. FETAL DEVELOPMENT
• Growth and maturation until birth.
• Major organs fully functional by 7 months.
13. PARTURITION
• Process of childbirth.
• Hormones: oxytocin (uterine contractions), relaxin (pelvic relaxation).
• Positive feedback mechanism.
14. LACTATION
• Mammary glands produce milk.
• Hormones: prolactin (milk production), oxytocin (milk ejection).
• Colostrum: rich in antibodies.
15. BREASTFEEDING
• Enhances immunity.
• Helps involution of uterus.
16. REPRODUCTIVE HEALTH
• Includes contraception, STDs, infertility and treatments (IVF, ICSI, surrogacy).
