2017/2024 Academic Year, Semester I
Module Name (Code): Respiratory System (RESP 2052)

Module Outline/Plan
Module Coordinator: Mr. Elias Wondim, Lecturer, Anatomy Unit Office, Mobile Number 0921452765

ECTS: 7 (5 Weeks) Target Group: Preclinical Year I (2015 Entry Students)

Module Duration: Dec 16/2024 – Jan 17/2025

Module Description:
This system-based module is intended to equip medical students with profound knowledge of basic sciences and development of early clinical
skills relevant to understanding of the respiratory system and related clinical problems. Students will also develop relevant competencies with
the Medical expertise, Scholar, Collaborator, Communicator, Manager, and Health Advocate Professional. This module is given on the first
semester during the second year of the pre-clerkship period of the undergraduate medical education program.
Module objective
By the end of this module, students will be able to apply knowledge of basic sciences for understanding the respiratory system and analyzing
disorder of the respiratory system.

Supporting objectives

 Apply knowledge of the normal structures and functions of the respiratory system in analyzing clinical problems
 Apply principles of physiologic mechanisms and processes of the respiratory system in analyzing clinical problems
 Apply principles of human life cycle, growth, development and aging of the respiratory system in analyzing clinical problems including
developmental anomalies
 Identify the various causes of a disease (genetic, developmental, metabolic, toxic, infectious, autoimmune, neoplastic and degenerative)
of the respiratory system and analyze the pathogenesis in clinical problems
 Analyze the pharmacokinetics and pharmacodynamics of drugs used in the treatment of disorders of the respiratory system
 Apply important determinants and risk factors affecting respiratory system diseases to protect and promote individual and population
health
 Demonstrate taking history from the patient with respiratory system disorder in a simulated setting
 Demonstrate physical examination pertinent to with respiratory system disorder in a simulated setting
 Perform basic investigations in the diagnosis of respiratory system disorders
 Demonstrate making an initial assessment of a clinical problem related to respiratory system in a simulated setting
 Discuss important life style, genetic, demographic, environment, health system, social, economic, psychological and cultural
determinants of respiratory system disorders.
 Contribute to a culture that promotes patient safety
