Numerical problems
1. Two soap bubbles of radii 4 cm and 5 cm are joined together so as to have a common
surface. Find the radius of the common surface.
2. A brass bar 1 cm × 1 cm in cross-section is supported on two knife-edges 100 cm apart.
A load of 1 kg at the center of the bar depresses that point by 2.51 mm. What is the
Young’s modulus for brass?
3. Consider the case where a beam is supported on two knife-edges and loaded in the
middle. Compare the loads required to produce equal depression for two beams, made
of the same material and having the same length and weight, with the only difference
that while one has a circular cross-section, the cross-section of the other is square.
4. Calculate the work done (in ergs) in spraying a drop of mercury of 1 mm radius into 1
million identical droplets, all of the same size. Surface tension of mercury = 550
dynes/cm.
5. By applying a torsional couple of 0.43 N-m at one end of a wire 0.5 m long and 1 mm
in diameter, the other end remaining fixed, the wire is twisted through 45⁰. Find the
modulus of rigidity of the wire.
6. Two cylindrical shafts have the same length and mass and are made of the same
material. One is solid while the other is hollow. Find out the ratio of their torsional
rigidities if the hollow one has an external radius twice the internal radius.
7. Water is flowing with a speed of 45 cm/s through a pipe of diameter 3 mm. Calculate
Reynold’s number. Is the flow streamline? Given 𝜂 = 1 centipoise.
8. There is a minute circular hole at the bottom of a small hollow vessel. The vessel has
to be immersed in water to a depth of 40 cm before any water penetrates inside. Find
the radius of the hole if the surface tension and density of water be 73 dyne/cm and 1.00
g/cc respectively.
9. Water rises in a capillary tube to a height 3.0 cm. If the tube is inclined at an angle 60⁰
with the vertical then what will be the position of the water along the length of the tube?
10. Find the coefficient of viscosity from the following data:
Volume rate of water issuing out through a capillary tube = 7.06 × 10−6 𝑚3 /𝑚𝑖𝑛𝑢𝑡𝑒
Head of water = 0.341 m
Length of the tube = 0.565 m
Radius of the tube = 5.1 × 10−4 𝑚
g = 9.8 𝑚/𝑠 2
