SOM Weekend Problem Set 02

This document is a problem set for B.Tech Second Year Aeronautical Engineering students focusing on Strength of Materials, specifically on forces in equilibrium and ladder problems. It includes five problems that require step-by-step solutions, with a note indicating that detailed solutions will be provided later and doubts will be addressed in the upcoming week. The problems involve analyzing the stability of ladders under various conditions and calculating forces and movements related to them.

Subject: KAE-403 (Strength of Materials)

Weekend Problem Set-02 (Friday 16-04-2021)

Topics Covered:
(a) Forces on objects in equilibrium
(b) Problems on ladder and friction

Note:
This is a self assessment practice set.
Solve the problems step by step with proper justification.
Detailed solution to this Problem Set will be shared with you shortly.
Doubts if any will be discussed in the upcoming week.

1. A 5 m long non-uniform ladder weighing 750 N is resting with its lower end 2.5 m from the wall.
The vertical wall is smooth and the floor has a coefficient of friction 0.25. Check whether the
ladder will be stable or not.
If stable, find the maximum possible reduction in ladder inclination such that it remains stable.
If unstable suggest options to make it stable.

2. Repeat the above problem with coefficient of friction 0.2

3. A ladder 6 m long leans against a vertical wall. If the top slides downward at the rate of 0.6 m/s,
find how fast the lower end is moving when it is 4 m from the wall.

4. A ladder, of length 5 m and mass 18 kg, has one end A resting on rough horizontal ground and
its other end B resting against a smooth vertical wall. The ladder makes an angle α with the
horizontal ground, where tanα = 4/3, as shown in the figure. The coefficient of friction between
the ladder and the ground is µ. A woman of mass 60 kg stands on the ladder at the point C,
where AC = 3 m. The ladder is on the point of slipping. Find the value of µ.
5. A uniform ladder of length ‘L’ makes an angle of 30° with the wall. Coefficient of friction between
wall and ladder and ground and ladder are 0.3 and 0.25 respectively. A man weighing 650 N
ascends the ladder. How high he will be able to go before the ladder slips ? Find the magnitude
of weight to be put at the bottom of the ladder so as to make it just sufficient to permit the man
to go to the top. Take ladder’s weight = 900 N
