BARS Program
The BARS Program – Compliance Checks
United Pacific is counting on you to be responsible in your job and uphold our reputation as a responsible
Retailer. This section has outlined the expectations for your job performance as it relates to the sale of age
restricted products. These standards are a requirement of your job. To support our ongoing effort to be a
responsible Retailer, we have adopted a Compliance Check Program called the BARS Program.
The BARS Program is a service designed to consistently ensure that Team Members ask for the ID of
customers who appear to be forty (40) years of age or younger for the purchase of alcohol and tobacco
products, In CO the Team Members must ask for the ID of customers who appear to be fifty (50) years of
age or younger and reinforce the store’s commitment to being a responsible retailer.
NOTE: Always follow local state, county and jurisdictional requirements.
BARS program details:
• BARS will send in “secret” shoppers. They expect that Team Members will ask for and verify a valid ID
from all customers PRIOR to scanning a product or quoting a price for an age restricted product.
• All “secret” shoppers are between the ages of 21 and 25.
• All “secret” shoppers will provide you with a Green Card or Red Card right away. You are expected
to report your result to your Store Manager immediately.
➢ If a Red Card is received, you must report the result to your Store Manager or District
Manager immediately via the 5-Minute Rule.
➢ If a Red Card is received the Team Members who receive the Red Card will receive follow up
training via the training platform.
• Random visits from the BARS Program shoppers occur monthly and may occur on any shift.
• Expectations from the Shopper: Shoppers monitor whether the ID was requested PRIOR to buying an age
restricted product.
All transactions are considered complete when the Team Member either quotes a price or requests payment.
➢ If ID is asked for and verified PRIOR to quoting a price, or requesting payment, a Green Card is given to the
Team Member.
➢ If ID was NOT asked for or verified PRIOR to quoting a price, a Red Card is given to the Team Member.
The Shopper will report whether the cashier swiped the ID through the ID scanner or manually entered the birth
date into the register. The swiping of the ID or manually entering the birth date into the register has no bearing
on whether the Team Member receives a Red or Green Card.
