It costs a lot of money for a country to host an international sports event, such as the Olympic
Games or football World Cup. Some people think that this is wasted money, while others
believe the opposite. Discuss both these views and give your own opinion.
The 21st century has witnessed a growth of large sport events in both quantity and quality. This
has raised controversy about cost-effectiveness when a country hosts these events. This essay
will elaborate on both sides and provide my opinion in case.
In terms of people opposing hosting international events, they may claim that the government
should spend money to deal with serious issues, namely the green house effect, aging
population and low birth rate, rather than on sports events. In other words, allocating a large
amount of national budget on the Olympics Games or World Cup could limit the expenditure for
other aspects. Taking Qatar which was the host of World Cup 2022, as a perfect example: this
country spent a significant sum of money on building new stadiums which then became useless
as the World Cup 2022 ended. To be more specific, if this amount of money had been invested
in other aspects, Qatar could have made and achieved more. What can be inferred from this is
that the expenditure for global sport events could be used for other fields which are more vital.
With regards to the supporters of large sport events, hosting these competitions, the
government might promote country's image, tradition and tourism, indeed. For further
illustration, a number of sports fans will travel to the host country in order to participate and
watch the global events. From this, various industries including hospitality, service and food
industry in this country could gain more profits, For instance, million tourists travelled to Qatar
during World Cup 2022 and contributed a large figure in Qatar’s GDP. This directly suggests
that international sport events can offer a range of merits for the host country.
In conclusion, organizing global sport competitions requires a considerable amount of money
from the national budget which should be allocated in other serious problems. These events,
however, could have a positive impact on the country’s economy, tourism and long-lasting
impression.
