Discus Throw – Practical File (A4 Page)

1. Introduction

The discus throw is a track and field event requiring strength, balance, coordination, and technique.

Athletes throw a circular disc as far as possible using rotational movement.

2. Equipment

• Men’s discus: 2 kg, 22 cm diameter

• Women’s discus: 1 kg, 18 cm diameter

• Throwing circle diameter: 2.50 m

• Sector angle: 34.92 degrees

3. Skills and Techniques

a) Grip: Discus rests on finger pads; fingers spread; index finger controls spin.

b) Stance: Stand at back of circle, feet shoulder-width apart, weight on rear foot.

Smooth swings to build momentum.

d) Rotation: 1½ turns maintaining balance and low posture.

e) Power Position: Right foot forward, hips and shoulders twisted to create torque.

f) Release: 35–40° angle, discus rolls off index finger, arm fully extended.

g) Follow-through: Maintain balance; stay inside circle.

4. Rules

• Throw must land inside sector.

• Do not touch top rim of circle.

• Stay inside circle until discus lands.

• Exit from back half of circle only.

• Measurement taken from first mark made by discus.

5. Safety Measures

• Ensure sector is clear before throwing.

• Stand behind thrower.


• Collect equipment only on coach’s signal.
