What is matrix? Give an example of matrix.
Matrix is a part of mathematics. It can be said easily when any numbers or parameters or coefficient of the
variables are arranged in an ordered system is called a matrix. Alternatively it is said a rectangular array of
numbers enclosed by two pairs of vertical lines or brackets is a matrix.
2 3 3 0
For example: A [ ], B[ ] A & B is a matrix.
4 −2 5 1
Types of Matrix:
1. Square Matrix
2. Row Matrix
3. Column Matrix
4. Diagonal Matrix
5. Scalar Matrix
6. Null Matrix
7. Symmetric Matrix
8. Transpose Matrix
1. Determine the addition and subtraction of the following two matrices
1 2 3 3 1 4
A = [2 0 1] B = [2 1 1]
4 −1 2 5 5 3
3 −4 2
2. If A = [ ] then Determine 2A & -3A
2 3 1
3 2 1 2 3
1 0 3
3. If A = [ ], B = [1 1 1] and C = [1 2] show that (AB)C = A(BC)
2 1 5
2 1 0 2 4
Business Application
1. A stock broker sold to his customer 200 shares of Beximco Pharma Ltd., 300 shares of Shinepukur
Ltd. and 500 shares of Singer BD. Ltd. The prices per share of the respective companies are as
follows:
Beximco Ltd. : Tk.10
Shinepukur Ltd. : Tk.15 and
Singer BD Ltd. : Tk.20
Requirements:
(i) Prepare a row matrix representing the number of shares of each stock sold.
(ii) Prepare a column matrix representing the price per share of each stock.
(iii) Determine the total price of the stock sold.
2. Arnob’s Denim makes three types denim! Gents, Ladies and babies, these denims are sold in
Dhaka and Chittagong.
The annual sales of three denims are given below:
Division Gents Ladies Babies
Dhaka 5000 7500 15000
Chittagong 9000 12000 8700
If the sales prices of the three products per unit be Tk.200, Tk.150 and Tk.75, using matrix compute the
total sales or total revenue of the two divisions.
3. A manufacturing company produces three types of products A, B and C respectively. The following
two matrices shows the rate of products in two different cities: -
1200 900 600 𝑪𝒊𝒕𝒚 𝑰
[ ]
900 600 300 𝑪𝒊𝒕𝒚 𝑰𝑰
If cost price of each products A, B, and C is Tk.1000, Tk.2000 and Tk.3000 respectively and selling
prices are Tk. 1500, Tk.3000 and Tk.4000 respectively, find the total profit using matrix algebra.
4. There are two families A & B, there are 2 men, 3 women and 1 child in family A and 1 man, 1 woman
and 2 children in family B. The recommended daily diet for calories and proteins are:
Family Members Calories Proteins
For Men 2400gms 55gms
For Women 1900gms 45gms
For Children 1800gms 33gms
Requirements:
(i) Represent the above data by matrix form.
(ii) Calculate the total requirements of calories and proteins for each of the two families.
