The document provides notes for a Mathematics 1B course focusing on the average value of a function, including learning outcomes related to integrals and areas between curves. It includes a formula for calculating the average value of a function over a closed interval and an example using the function f(x) = ln x. Additionally, there are activities for students to practice finding average values for different functions.

2. Average Value of a Function

The average value of a function f (x) on a closed interval [a, b] is given by

the formula:
1 b
favg = ∫ f (x) dx
b−a a

This formula represents the mean of the function values over the interval.
It can be interpreted as the height of a constant function that has the
same integral as f (x) over [a, b] .

Example

Find the average value of f (x) = ln x over [1, e].

The formula for the average value of a function is:

b
1
favg = ∫ f (x) dx
b − a a

Substituting the given function and interval:

e
1
favg = ∫ ln x dx
e − 1 1

Using integration by parts, let u = ln x, dv = dx, then:

1
du = dx, v = x
x

∫ ln x dx = x ln x − x + C

Applying limits:
1 e
favg = [x ln x − x]
1
e − 1

1
= ((e ln e − e) − (1 ln 1 − 1))
e − 1

1 1
= ((e − e) − (0 − 1)) = × 1
e − 1 e − 1

1
favg =
e − 1
