Chapter: The Invisible Living World

The world around us is full of living organisms. Some are visible while others are
too small to be seen with naked eyes. These tiny organisms are called
microorganisms. Diagram: [Human Eye] ---> cannot see ---> (microbes)
What is a Cell?

A cell is the basic unit of life. All living organisms are made up of cells. Parts of cell:
1. Cell membrane 2. Cytoplasm 3. Nucleus Diagram: +------------------+ | Cytoplasm

Discovery of Cell

Robert Hooke discovered cells in cork in 1665. Leeuwenhoek discovered

microorganisms. Important: Microscope helps to see tiny organisms.
Plant Cell

Plant cells have: - Cell wall - Chloroplast - Large vacuole Diagram: [Cell wall] |

Animal Cell

Animal cells do not have cell wall. They have smaller vacuoles. Diagram: Oval

Microorganisms

Microorganisms are very small living organisms. Types: - Bacteria - Fungi -

Protozoa - Algae Diagram: Bacteria: rod Amoeba: irregular
Uses of Microorganisms

1. Making curd (Lactobacillus) 2. Bread making (Yeast) 3. Decomposition Diagram:

Food waste ---> microbes ---> manure
Harmful Effects

Some microorganisms cause diseases. They spoil food. Example: - Bacteria -

Viruses
Levels of Organization

Cell → Tissue → Organ → Organ system → Organism Diagram: Cell → Tissue →

Organ → Body
Conclusion

Cells are basic unit of life. Microorganisms are everywhere and play important role.
