Question 4
Consider the network in figure below, determine the power in the 3 Ω resistor using
Thevenin's Theorem.
Figure
SOLUTION
- Remove the 3Ω resistor, then with the battery short-circuited, the resistance
RAB between A and B is obtained
With the battery short-circuited,
RAB = RTH =
(1 2 + 4 + 2)
(1 + (2 + 4 + 1))
1 8
= = 0.89 Ω
1+ 8
20
Therefore, by apply ohm’s law: The current in the circuit I = = 2.22 A
9
The voltage VTh between A and B is also found with the 3Ω resistor removed.
20
VTH = 8 =17.78 V
9
Therefore, the current in the 3Ω resistor will be
VTH 17.78
ITH = =
RTH + R L 0.89 + 3
ITH = 4.57A
Power in the 3Ω resistor

Question 5
For the bridge Network in figure 2.0 below, use Thevenin theorem to determine the current
in the 5 Ω resistor and its direction.
Solution
To find the open circuit voltage VAB, RL from the circuit
To determine the p.d (VAC) between A and C
by applying potential divider rule:

VAC = .E
R1 + R4
3
VAC = (30) = 18 V
