are romantically involved together.

the act of binding yourself to a course of
action.

a relationship formed out of romantic

love. There is a strong emotional
connection, love, intimacy, passion, and
commitment.
The Process of Attraction

A. Similarities - Which is true: “opposites attract” or birds of the same

feather flock together”? People who are similar in many ways foster

attraction with each other. This also leads to positive feelings towards
the same person because he/she thinks that he/she will be evaluated
positively.
The Process of Attraction

B. Proximity - This the best predictor of liking and loving. When people

are geographically near each other, they anticipate interaction, and this
led to the likelihood of repeated exposure.
The Process of Attraction

C. Mere Exposure - or the repeated exposure to an object or person will

more likely lead to positive feelings. You are more likely to be friends

with her/his seatmate than the person in the other classroom.

The Process of Attraction

D. Physical Attraction - Often, at the initial stage of getting-to-know-

each-other, being physically attracted to the person significantly

influences the course of the relationships.

Essential Elements in a Romantic Relationship

Adolescent stage is the stage of romantic exploration. You are beginning

to form relationships out of romantic love. This is of course normal part

of your development. It can help you develop your interpersonal skill

and establish a sense of identity. However, romantic relationship can

also cause harm to you if you are not careful. The following are the

things you must keep in forging a healthy relationship

It takes a lot of work as you manage your differences even if you think you

are so alike in many ways. It is not all fun and laughter. It includes serious

works such as balancing your time, planning your life, and making
priorities for the future. Howe well can you handle disagreements,

frustrations, and conflicts? Maturity is the ability to face what comes to

you and handle it in a way that lets both of you grow.
Relationships require attention and work. Do you have enough time to

give? Are you ready to face its demands? How long and far would you go

for the relationship?

most relationships fell out because of miscommunication. We are

not capable of reading other people’s minds, their feelings and

thoughts. Being able to express your feelings, ideas, wants, and

desires are crucial for achieving an understanding of each other.
For two unique individuals in a relationship, accepting differences and

understanding each other’s flaws are important. To change your partner to

be the person you want him or her to be is not fair thing to do. You will
have to learn to let the person be that person he/she is. Respect his/her

individuality.
HEALTHY EXPRESSION OF LOVE
A. Respect each other - You should not do things that would hurt or
downplay the other’s feelings, values, and dignity. Most importantly, you
must respect each other’s boundaries.

B. Exercise give and take in the relationship - it cannot always be your way, or
the other cannot have his/her way all the time. You need to know how to
compromise. It will be hard to keep a relationship when a power struggle exists.

C. Give each other space to grow - one importance of relationships is it offers

you opportunity to grow. It is counterproductive to put so many limitations upon
each other, like choosing the friends he/she will go out with, or what activities
he/she is allowed to do.
There are also “warning signs” when a relationship is no longer
healthy

• Too many limitations that affect your growth

• Abuse in any form. It includes physical abuse (example is hurting,
hitting, etc.) and emotional abuse (berating, belittling,
embarrassing, or any form of verbal abuse that could lower one’s
self-esteem)
• Conditional love. Example: “I love you if you…” “I will do this if
you will…” Love should not have conditions.
• Forcing the other into doing sexual activities without his/her
consent.
