Q4. Figure 4 shows a shear frame (i.e., rigid beams) and its floor masses and story stiffnesses.
Determine, (a) the natural frequencies and mode shapes, (b) Verify that modes satisfy the
orthogonality properties, (c) normalize each mode such that roof components are unity, and (d)
normalize mode shapes with respect to the mass matrix.
Q5. This structure in Figure 4 is subjected to harmonic horizontal forces as: (i) p(t) = po sin(ωt)
at the top floor and (ii) p1(t) = po sin(ωt) and p2(t) = 2po sin(ωt) act simultaneously at the
bottom floor and top floor, respectively. Derive equations for the steady-state displacements of
the structure using modal analysis method.

Q6. The two-story building shown (Figure 5) has very stiff floor slabs relative to the supporting
columns. Calculate the natural frequencies and mode shapes. (k = 4*106 N/m).

Q8. For a two-degree-of-freedom system, the modal vectors are given by.
The initial conditions are:
The natural frequencies of the system are p1 and p2. Determine the equations of
displacements in free vibration.
Q9. The mass and stiffness properties of a three-story shear building, together with its
undamped vibration mode shapes and frequencies, are shown in Figure 7. The structure is set
into free vibration by displacing the floors as follows: v1(0) = 0.3 in, v2(0) = - 0.8 in, and v3(0)
= 0.3 in, and then releasing them suddenly at time t = 0. Determine the displaced shape at time
t = 2π/ω1:
(a) Assuming no damping.
(b) Assuming ξ = 10% in each mode.
