Assignment #2
(Thick Cylinder, Compound Cylinder, Rotating Discs)
1. A steel cylinder with an inside diameter of 150 mm and an outside diameter of 250
mm is subjected to an internal pressure of 75 MN/m2 and an external pressure of 150
MN/m2. Determine radial and tangential stresses at a point midway in the cylinder
wall.
2. A thick-walled tube with an internal radius of 10 cm is subjected to an internal
pressure of 196000 kPa. E=196*106 kPa and poissons ratio=0.3. Determine the value
of the external radius if the maximum shear stress developed is limited to 294*106
kPa. Calculate the change in the internal radius due to the pressure.
10. Determine the radial and circumferential stresses due to the internal pressure p = 196*106
kPa in a composite tube consisting of an inner copper tube of radii 10 cm and 20 cm and
an outer steel tube of external radius 40 cm. The Poisson’s ratio of steel is 0.3, poisons ratio
of copper is 0.34. Esteel = 196*106 kPa and Ecopper = 98*106 kPa. Calculate the stresses at the
inner and outer radius points of each tube. Determine the contact pressure also.
12. A disk of thickness t and outside diameter 2b is shrunk onto a shaft of diameter 2a, producing a
radial interface pressure p in the non-rotating condition. It is then rotated with an angular velocity ω
rad/s. If f is the coefficient of friction between the disk and shaft and ω0 is the value of angular velocity
for which the interface pressure falls to zero. Show that
a) The maximum horsepower is transmitted when ω = ω0/√3 and
b) This maximum horsepower is equal to 0.000366 a2tfpω0 where dimensions are in inches and
pounds.
