SCOUT GUIDE PRAYER

Oh merciful God, give us the strength to stand firm on the path of duty, May we make our lives
successful by doing good to others. May we become servants of the poor, the weak, and the
distressed and remove their sorrows, Those who are lost and wandering, may we save them
and be saved ourselves. May we stay far away from deceit, hypocrisy, malice, pretense,
falsehood, and injustice, May our lives be pure and simple, showering the nectar of holy love.
May we be mindful of our dignity, honor, and limits, and have pride in God, The country where
we were born, may we sacrifice ourselves for it. Oh merciful God, give us the strength to stand

BRIEF HISTORY OF THE SCOUT MOVEMENT
The institution that serves the nation day and night was born ages ago, but its current form was
given by a military officer. The name of that military officer was Baden-Powell. He was born on
February 22, 1857, in England.
This movement is spread almost everywhere in the world today, but there was a time when it
was limited only to the British army. At that time, scouts were trained only for the military. In fact,
the word "Scout" means a spy, someone who does the work of extracting necessary secrets
from the enemy. Today, every country's army has a scout troop that walks ahead of the military,
doing courageous work of demonstrating and gathering intelligence.
To give practical shape to the above plan, Baden-Powell organized the first Scout camp from
July 29 to August 1, 1907, at Brownsea Island (England). In this camp, 20 boys were divided
into four patrols and trained. This camp was conducted as an experiment, and it was successful.
The flame of the Scout movement came to India in 1909. In 1911, through the continuous efforts
of Mrs. Annie Besant, the Indian Boy Scout Association was born. It became more popular in
South India. In North India, through the joint efforts of Pandit Madan Mohan Malaviya, Dr.
Hridaynath Kunzru, and Shri Ram Bajpai, the Seva Samiti and Scout Association were
established. Because Indian boys were given full freedom to participate in it, the differences
between the scout organizations naturally disappeared. Due to the efforts of India's then
Education Minister Maulana Azad, the Boy Scouts Association and other organizations were
merged.

The aim of Scouting/Guiding are:

3.​ Handicraft and skill
4.​ Service to others.
The Scout / Guide movement has its foundation on certain fundamental principles. They are:
1.​ Belief in God.
2.​ Practice of the Scout / Guide law and promise.
3.​ Use of outdoor for activities.
4.​ Voluntary membership.
5.​ Loyalty to country.

AGE-WISE CLASSIFICATION OF SCOUT/GUIDE

1. Cub / Bulbul
It includes boys and girls from 5 to 10 years of age. Their patrol consists of 6 boys/girls. Their
group has 12 to 24 boys/girls. Their group is called a "Pack" (flock), and their teacher is called a
Cub Master / Flock Leader. The color of their badge is blue. Their motto is "Do your best".

2. Scout / Guide
It includes boys and girls from 11 to 18 years of age. Their patrol consists of 6 to 10 boys/girls.
Their group is called a "Troop" (or Company). Their teacher is called a Scout Master (or Guide
Captain). The color of their badge is green. Their motto is "Be prepared".

3. Rover / Ranger
It includes young men and women from 18 to 35 years of age. Their patrol consists of 12 to 24
young men/women. Their group is called a "Team" (or Crew). Their teacher is called a Rover
Leader (or Ranger Leader). The color of their badge is red. Their motto is "Service".

WHY GUIDING?
1.​ Utilization of Time: A Guide girl learns to utilize her free time properly. An interest is
generated to work together with good companions.
 2.​ Character Building: Character is the greatest wealth of life. The more of this wealth one
possesses, the greater they become.
3.​ Education in Ideal Citizenship: Guiding is an ideal school for good citizenship. The
pride of a society and nation increases with good citizens, and Guiding helps in all ways
to impart education for good citizenship.
4.​ Opportunity for Service: There is no holier work than service. One should consider
serving others as their supreme religion and duty.
5.​ Good Habits: By learning good habits, Guide boys and girls take an interest in good
deeds. A sense of self-reliance is awakened in them.
6.​ Trustworthiness: Guides learn to speak the truth. Their truthfulness makes them
trustworthy to others. They consider it their duty to respect others.
7.​ Health: By actively participating in outdoor games and activities in the fresh air, their
physical and mental development takes place. They follow the rules of good health.
8.​ Development of Talent: Guiding is helpful in every way in developing the hidden talents
of girls. The proper development of talent makes the girls' future beautiful.
9.​ Happiness: Happiness is a symbol of life. In the free environment of nature, among their
companions, a Guide completes difficult tasks while smiling and laughing.

THE LAW
1.​ A Scout/Guide's honour is to be trusted.
2.​ A Scout/Guide is loyal.
3.​ A Scout's/Guide's duty is to be useful and to help others.
4.​ A Scout/Guide is a friend to all and a brother/sister to every other Scout/Guide no matter
to what country, class or creed the other may belong.
5.​ A Scout/Guide is courteous.
6.​ A Scout/Guide is a friend to animals and helpful in protecting the environment.
7.​ A Scout/Guide is disciplined and obeys orders.
8.​ A Scout/Guide is brave and smiles under all difficulties.
9.​ A Scout/Guide is thrifty.
10.​A Scout/Guide is pure in thought, word and deed.

TRACKING SIGNS
When Scouts/Guides travel on foot, they leave certain signs so that they can easily track or find
anything.
Road Signs
●​ Circle with a dot inside / Arrow: The path is clear, keep going straight.
●​ Cross (X) / Circle with an X inside: Do not go on this path. The road is closed.
●​ Square with an arrow pointing right/left: We are going in the right direction (Right /
Left).
●​ Box with a number (e.g., 4): Hidden message. Walk exactly as many steps forward as
the number written inside the box.

Water Signs
●​ Wavy lines with an arrow: Water is drinkable.
●​ Wavy lines crossed out: Water is dirty.
●​ Triangle shape / Arrow pointing: Scout camp is in the direction of the arrow.
●​ Parallel curvy lines: River ahead.
●​ Bracket-like shapes facing each other [ ]: Bridge ahead.
●​ Square with a solid block inside: Rest for a while.

Tree Signs
●​ Arrow carved/drawn on a trunk: The path is clear, keep going straight.
●​ Branch tied or pointing: Go towards the smaller sign/branch (Right / Left).
●​ Crossed branches: The path is closed.

Grass Signs
●​ Grass tied in a knot: The path is clear, keep going straight.
●​ Grass bent over in one direction: Go in the direction the grass is bent.

WHISTLE SIGNALS
1.​ One short whistle [ o ] : Attention / Silence.
2.​ One long whistle [ — ] : Halt / Order is about to be given.
3.​ Continuous short whistles [ o o o o ] : Assemble / Gather around.
4.​ Three short, one long whistle [ o o o — ] : Patrol leader is called.
5.​ Four short, one long whistle [ o o o o — ] : Group leader is called.
6.​ One short, one long alternate [ o — o — o ] : Danger alarm.

SIGN LANGUAGE (MORSE CODE)

Morse code was created by the American scientist Mr. Morse. Mr. Morse also invented the
telegraph. Various mediums can be used to transmit messages using Morse code, such as:
Flags, Whistle, Bugle, Smoke, Flashing mirrors in sunlight, Fire, etc.

FIRST AID
The medical treatment given to a patient before the arrival of a doctor is called First Aid.
First Aid Box Contents: Scissors, cotton, bandage, Disprin, Vicks, Moov, Iodex, Dettol, etc.
Types of Bandages: There are two main types of bandages:
1.​ Roller (Round) Bandage
2.​ Triangular Bandage
Arm Sling: This sling is used to support the forearm and the hand. There are two types of arm
slings:
1.​ Small Sling
2.​ Big Sling
Making Stretchers:
1.​ Two-hand stretcher
2.​ Three-hand stretcher
3.​ Four-hand stretcher
4.​ Sprain stretcher
5.​ Armpit stretcher
6.​ Lathi (stick) and scarf stretcher

TYING KNOTS
1.​ Reef Knot (Doctor's Knot): It is flat and does not prick the wound. It is used to tie two
ends of the same rope together.
2.​ Clove Hitch (Peg Knot): This is used in pitching tents, etc.
3.​ Mahesh Knot (Timber Hitch/Figure-Eight): Used to secure a rope without cutting it.
4.​ Sheepshank (Shortening Knot): It is used to shorten a rope without cutting it.
5.​ Round Turn and Two Half Hitches: This is also used in pitching tents, etc.
6.​ Sheet Bend (Weaver's Knot): It is used to join pieces of cloth or ropes that are thick and
thin, or wet and dry.
7.​ Bowline (Pole Star Knot): This is used to pull a person out of a smoke-filled room or
water safely.
HIKING REPORT
On the morning of 5th March 2023 at 7:00 AM, all of us [Link] 2nd-year male and female
students set off for a hike to Haridwar (Uttarakhand) by bus from our college, Trident College of
Education, under the guidance of Scout Guide Trainer Mr. Manmohan Kumar. During the
journey, we didn't even realize how quickly we reached Haridwar. The students enjoyed
themselves thoroughly by playing Antakshari and organizing other small entertaining programs
on the bus. We reached Haridwar at 11:00 AM.
After that, all the students had tea and samosas at a dhaba. Following this, the students were
divided into different patrols, and Patrol No. 5 & 6 were appointed as the vanguard (pathfinder)
patrols. Using various tracking and pathfinding signs, the vanguard patrol led us, and we saw
many religious places in Haridwar, such as Mansa Devi and Chandi Devi. Afterwards, at 2:00
PM, all of us had our afternoon meal at a dining hall. All our teachers and the Scout Guide
trainer also had lunch with us at the hall.
Later, we got the opportunity to roam around Haridwar again and shopped for our favorite items
in the local markets. All the students in our group drank soda-shikanji there. After enjoying a full
day of fun and travel, we departed for Meerut at 4:30 PM.
Concluding our joyful journey, we all reached our respective homes safely at 7:30 PM.
Our trip to Haridwar was highly fascinating and entertaining. I would like to express my gratitude
to our Scout Guide Trainer Mr. Manmohan Kumar, our teachers Mr. Naveen Kumar and Mr.
Lokesh Kumar, and our Principal Dr. Shivani Kumari, because of whom all of us students were
able to experience this unforgettable and pleasant journey (hiking).

CONVOCATION CEREMONY (VALEDICTORY)

Date: 7th March 2023
Scouting and Guiding holds great importance in India. On the final day of the Scout Guide
Camp, a ceremony was organized in the college courtyard in the presence of Director Dr. K.V.
Singh, Principal Dr. Shivani Kumari, Scout Guide Trainer Mr. Manmohan Kumar, and all the
school teachers. Prayers from different religions were recited, and the following programs
including plays and dances were organized.

On this occasion, the Scout/Guide Trainer Mr. Manmohan Kumar initiated the students (Diksha).
At the end of the ceremony, our college's Director Dr. K.V. Singh and Principal Dr. Shivani
Kumari shared their thoughts. Thanking all the pupil-teachers (students), our Scout Guide Camp
concluded with great pomp and show.
