Boca Raton Tank Reservoir
1. Introduction
1.1 Objective
AT&T and Verizon desire to add cell antennas to an existing water tower structure owned by the City of
Poway. The existing water tank reservoir consists of a steel plate shell, floor, and roof structure. The
tank was originally constructed in 1959, but has been upgraded as recently as 2008.
AT&T and Verizon would like to add up to 40 cell antennas along the top perimeter of the tower. The
heaviest cell antenna proposed weighs 84 Ibs and each antenna unit has two (2) RRUS units weighing 64
Ibs each. Adding for the weight of wiring, cables, and additional framing to mount the antennas and other
components, the total weight for each unit is approximately 287 Ibs for a total of up to 11.48 kips total for
all 40 antennas. This configuration was used as the controlling condition for analysis.
Atkins NA has been contracted to provide a seismic analysis for the proposed modifications of the
existing tank structure per the current code, AWWA 0100-11.
1.2 Methodology
A seismic analysis in this calculations package was performed using AWWA 0100-11, which is the
current governing code for water storage tanks. The weight and location of the antennas was calculated
and added to the tank seismic calculations per design standards.
2. Design Parameters
The structures were designed using the following parameters.
Seismic Loads
Importance Factor 1.25
Site Class Definition B
Site Coefficient, Fa 1.0
Site Coefficient, Fv 1.0
Mapped short period spectral Accel,Ss 1.04 g
Mapped one-second period spectral Accel, S1 0.37 g
3. Conclusion
The Boca Raton tank reservoir can withstand the additional loads generated from the proposed cell
antennas, with the dominate load being seismic. The calculated resistance to sliding, overturning, shell
compression, foundation analysis, and rock anchors are all within allowable parameters per AWWA
0100- 11. Additional cross check calculations using the API code (from which the AWWA was derived)
have been performed to verify the veracity of the AWWA calculations. The additional checks are in
agreement with the AWWA calculations.
