28)Read the following passage and answer the questions:
All the materials we see in our daily life are made up of matter. Matter can be classified into
different states such as solid, liquid and gas on the basis of intermolecular forces and the
arrangement of particles. In a solid, particles are tightly packed together and have very low
kinetic energy. They have a definite shape and a certain volume. In a liquid, particles are
loosely packed than in a solid and are able to flow around each other, giving the liquid an
indefinite shape. In a gas, the particles have a great deal of space between them and have high
kinetic energy. A gas has neither definite shape nor volume.
i) The forces of attraction between the particles of matter is maximum in: 1
a) iron rod b) kerosene oil c) glycerine d) dry air
ii) The substance with least inter particle space is: 1
a) methanol b) acetic acid c) copper d) oxygen
iii) Which of the following indicates the relative randomness of particles in the three states of
matter? 1

37. If the resultant of all the forces acting on a body is zero, the forces are called balanced
forces. A body under the action of balanced forces does not change its position of rest
(or of uniform motion) and it appears as if no force is acting on it. They can, however,
change the shape of the body. On the other hand, if the resultant of all the forces
acting on a body is not zero, the forces are called unbalanced forces. When
unbalanced forces act on a body, they produce a change in its state of rest or of
uniform motion. (4)
