Theme: Modular Modernism and Narrative Display
1. Introduction: The Inspiration
This assignment draws inspiration from the work of David
Umemoto. Known for his "Paper Cut Fold" aesthetic and complex
modular geometries,
Umemoto’s work exists at the intersection of architecture and
sculpture. His pieces often evoke a sense of ancient ruins,
rhythmic repetition, and the interplay between planes,solid mass
and void.
Your challenge is to use the medium of paper, creating a structural "spine" that tells the story of
an assigned architect.
The Site Context
The intervention is located within a neutral, industrial shell:
● Warehouse Dimensions: 12 M x 37 M in Plan
● Placement: The display wall must be positioned in the center of the warehouse, acting as
the primary circulatory and visual element of the space.
The Design Task
You are required to design and construct a Display Wall with the following constraints:
● Dimensions: 2.7 Meters in Height and 27 meters in Length.
● Purpose: To showcase the work of your assigned architect (drawings, models, and
photographs).
● Language: The wall should not be a flat surface. It must be a three-dimensional, modular
structure. Use Umemoto’s logic of repetition, subtraction,Leveled Up Stairs and
interlocking volumes to create niches, pedestals, and recessed panels for the exhibits.
Programmatic Requirements
The wall must functionally integrate the following:
● Drawing Zones: Vertical Vertical or Flat or angled surfaces.
● Model Niches: Inset "pockets" or cantilevered ledges to hold physical models of the architect’s
work.
● Narrative Flow: The 27-meter length should provide a chronological or thematic journey through
the architect's career.
Deliverables
1. Concept Sketches: Analysis of David Umemoto’s geometry and how it can be adapted for a display system.
2. 1:20 Model: A detailed 2-meter long segment of the wall demonstrating the modularity and material
technique.
3. Process Journal: Documentation of paper-to-mass experiments and structural stability.
4. The Wall should terminate with a model silhouette of any of the architects most popular building.
