Title

Integrated Assessment of Groundwater Contamination and Remediation Strategies in Urban

Areas of Bangladesh

Motivation and scientific aims

Please also specify the link to your bachelor thesis or previous work experience.
 Address urgent water challenges in urban Bangladesh, safeguard public health, and
promote sustainable urban development
 Integrate hydrogeological modeling, risk assessment, and stakeholder engagement to
develop effective groundwater remediation strategies tailored to local contexts.
 Alterations in land cover and land use patterns directly influence the distribution and
transport of contaminants, which is linked with my bachelor thesis.

State of the art

 Urbanization and industrialization intensify groundwater contamination, necessitating

holistic assessment approaches
 Incorporating advanced hydrogeological modeling and stakeholder engagement enhances
remediation effectiveness
 Research outcomes inform evidence-based policies for sustainable urban water
management and public health protection

Methodology

 Study Area Selection and Data Collection: [Link] urban areas affected by groundwater
contamination, [Link] groundwater quality data and hydrogeological parameters,
[Link] field surveys and utilize GIS for spatial analysis.
 Hydrogeological Modeling and Risk Assessment: [Link] hydrogeological models to
simulate contaminant transport, [Link] health risks associated with groundwater
contamination, 3. Utilize probabilistic risk analysis to quantify uncertainties.

Title

Monitoring Land Use and Land Cover Changes of Dhaka District Using Remote Sensing and GIS
Techniques.

Abstract in English, German or Spanish

Dhaka District is a district in central Bangladesh, and is the densest district in the nation. It is a
part of the Dhaka Division. Dhaka, the capital of Bangladesh, and rests on the eastern banks of
the Buriganga River which flows from the Turag to the southern part of the district.
Land use is commonly defined as a series of operations on land, carried out by humans, with the
intention to obtain products and/ or benefits through using land resources it includes wildlife
management area, agricultural land, urban, recreation area etc.
Land cover is according to Food and Agricultural Organization, Land cover refers to observed
physical and biological cover of earth’s land. Land is covered by various types of vegetation, grass
land, forest, water bodies, barren land etc. it all comes under land cover.
This study focuses on the development of a Sentinel-2 data classification according to the LULC
requirements on the cloud-based platform Google Earth Engine (GEE). The Random Forest
method was used for classification. In terms of classification accuracy, a combination of these
parameters was tested: The Number of Trees (NT). A total of 400 combinations of different
parameters were tested. The highest accuracy classification with an overall accuracy = 95%.
Applying maximum likelihood and multi-sectoral supervised classification algorithm LULC map
from the years of 1990-2020 is given with ten years’ interval respectively. In 1990, waterbody
was 12.54% of the total area. After ten years, this waterbody has decreased almost 1.55% in
2000 and in the next ten years’ waterbody has decreased almost 1.35%. Next, ten years’
waterbody had decreased and it was 8.25% from the total area. Vegetation had decreased by
0.97% from 1990 to 2020. First ten years, it had 38.37% but in the next twenty years, it had
decreased almost 3.46%. On the other side build-up area had increased fast; the build-up area
was only 12.30% of the total area in 1990. After ten years in 2000, it had 12.55% where almost
0.25% had increased. Next ten years it had increased 5.51% and next ten years it had increased
22.21%; that was 40.27% from total area. Almost 27.97% land had changed to urban after 30
years. In 1990, Bare and Crop land was 36.78% of the total area. After ten years, this Bare and
crop land has decreased almost 1.18% in 2000 and in the next ten years’ Bare and crop land has
decreased almost 15.12%. Next, ten years’ Bare and crop land had decreased and it was 14.08%
from the total area.
