Uber Reserve: Low Adoption Analysis & Product Recommendation

Part 1: Define the Problem Using First Principles Thinking

Breaking Down to Fundamental Truths

What is the core purpose of transportation?

 Getting from Point A → Point B, at a desired time, with acceptable cost, comfort, and
reliability.

Why do humans book anything in advance?

1. Fear of unavailability

2. Desire for price certainty

3. Anxiety reduction / peace of mind

What does Uber's OnDemand model already deliver in Tier 1 cities?
Availability 95%+ match rate, 35 min ETAs

Price Predictability Reasonably stable outside peak surge

Convenience Instant, no planning required

User Habit Deeply initigrated with "book when ready" behaviour

The Core Problem Statement

Uber Reserve solves for "certainty in advance" — but in Tier 1 cities, OnDemand already

provides perceived certainty within minutes. The increased price value doesn't justify the

special services.

Things reducing the use of Advance booking

1. Users want to book in advance” Most urban professionals prefer flexibility; plans
change often
2. Advance booking = peace of mind” Only true if the promise is guaranteed — driver
cancellations destroy trust

The real question isn't "How do we get users to book in advance?"

It's: "What promise can Reserve deliver that OnDemand cannot — and is that promise

compelling enough to change behaviour of customer ?"

Part 2: Apply the JTBD (Jobs to Be Done) Framework

Using JTBD Concept :

1. Functional Jobs (What users need to accomplish)

* "Get to the airport on time for my flight"

* "Arrive at important meeting/interview without being late"

* "Have reliable daily commute to office"

* "Pick up guests/family at a specific time"

* "Reach events/weddings on schedule"

2. Emotional Jobs (How users want to feel)

* "Feel in control of my unpredictable life"

* "Eliminate logistics anxiety the night before"

* "Wake up feeling prepared, not stressed"

* "Avoid embarrassment of being late"

* "Feel like I have a backup plan"

3. Social Jobs (How users want to be perceived)

* "Appear punctual and professional"

* "Be seen as someone who has good time management and values others time"

* "Take care of guests/family responsibly"

Key JTBD Insight

Users don't want to "book a ride in advance."

The gap: Uber Reserve promises this but doesn't guarantee it. One driver cancellation =

broken trust forever.

Part 3: Review User Behaviour & Research

Hypothesized Behavioural Data Signals

Key Behavioural Patterns :

* Reserve attempts peak at 4 to 6 AM Users most anxious about early morning availability

* 35% driver cancellation rate for Reserve Critical trust breaker — one cancellation =

permanent churn

* Users check prices before confirming Reserve Price uncertainty prevents conversion

Personal Insight
 "I booked Reserve for my 5 AM airport trip. Driver cancelled at 4:30 AM." — Trust

betrayal (irreversible damage)

 "I don't get what Reserve gives me that booking 10 minutes before doesn't. Uber

always has cars." — Unclear value proposition

 "What if my meeting gets rescheduled? I don't want to be locked in." — Flexibility

anxiety

 "Is Reserve more expensive? I'd rather just check prices when I actually need the
ride." — Price transparency issue

Research Summary
1. Primary Barrier: TRUST

The one reason users don't adopt Reserve is fear of driver cancellation. OnDemand allows

rebooking; Reserve cancellation feels like betrayal.

2. Secondary Barriers:

Unclear differentiation from OnDemand, Perceived inflexibility, Price uncertainty

Part 4: Propose One Product or Experience Improvement
