Nov 13 & 14 - Lesson 6 Note Guide - Temperature and the Mantle
What did images like this tell us about the temperature of the solid rock in the Earth’s mantle?
Is the temperature of the rock heterogeneous or homogeneous?
(Circle below)
● Heterogeneous - the solid rock has different temperatures at
different locations.
● Homogenous - the solid rock of the mantle has the same
temperature everywhere.
The rock in the Earth’s mantle can flow like a liquid as well. This means which of the following is true?
(circle)
● If the rock can flow and has different temperatures everywhere, it does not affect the motion of the
plates, earthquakes, or volcanos because it is too random.
● If the rock can flow and has different temperatures, there are unbalanced forces, energy will transfer
and the mantle will change which can cause earthquakes and volcanos.
Now, let’s dig deeper into what happens when flowing matter is heated. We will try to answer these
questions:
➔ When flowing matter is heated, what changes at the particle level?
➔ How do these particle level changes affect what we observe at the macro scale?
➔ How might this affect how matter flows in Earth’s mantle?
Draw a model of how you think the particles are spaced and moving in the three mantle locations shown:
Watch this video that models how energy is
transferred and temperatures change.

Create a model to describe and explain why the matter in the tank is moving as shown in the video. Try to
include particle-level interactions, energy and forces. Use images, words, symbols… Use the space below
the model to add any additional explanation.
