Tutorial 4 – AI Tools for Research
Objectives:
By the end of this tutorial, students will be able to:
1. Identify different categories of AI research tools and their roles in supporting the research
workflow.
2. Apply selected AI tools (e.g., Elicit, Scholarcy, ChatGPT) to perform literature search,
summarization, and organization tasks.
3. Evaluate the strengths and limitations of AI tools in terms of accuracy, ethics, and
usability.
4. Demonstrate the integration of AI tools into the early stages of an academic research
project to improve productivity and originality.
Part 1 – AI for Research Question Generation
Goal: Use AI to help brainstorm and refine research questions.
Tools: Elicit
Hands-on Activity:
1. Students type a broad topic (e.g., AI in Education).
2. In Elicit, generate related research questions.
3. Students choose the best question and justify why it’s specific and measurable.
Outcome: 1 refined research question ready for the next stages.
Part 2 – AI for Paper Exploration & Summarization (Paper Digestion)
Goal: Learn how to use AI to summarize and analyze academic papers.
Tools: Scholarcy / Scispace
Hands-on Activity:
1. Upload a PDF paper to Scholarcy.
2. Extract:
o Research problem
o Methodology
o Results
o Key contributions
3. Open the same paper in Scispace Copilot, ask:
“Explain this paragraph in simple terms.”

Outcome: students understand how AI extracts and simplifies research content.
Part 3 – AI for Knowledge Structuring & Visualization
Goal: Use AI tools to visualize relationships between studies and build a knowledge network.
Tools: Research Rabbit / Connected Papers
Hands-on Activity:
1. Enter the title of one selected paper.
2. Observe the visualization map that shows:
o Prior works
o Derivative works
o Related clusters
3. Discuss:
o What themes or gaps appear?
o Which area seems least explored?
Outcome: a visual knowledge map and potential research gap.
Part 4 – AI for Academic Writing & Paraphrasing
Goal: Use AI to improve writing clarity and avoid plagiarism.
Tools: Quillbot / ChatGPT / Grammarly
Hands-on Activity:
1. Copy a paragraph from a selected paper.
2. Paste it into Quillbot to paraphrase.
3. Paste the result into Grammarly to check grammar and tone.
4. Compare: Which version is clearer and still faithful to the original meaning?
Outcome: ethically paraphrased text suitable for inclusion in a research report.
