The Sustainable Development Goals

Introduction to the Sustainable Development Goals

The Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), also known as the Global Goals, are a collection of
17 integrated and interrelated goals established by the United Nations in 2015. They form a
shared blueprint for peace and prosperity for people and the planet, now and into the future. The
2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development is the overarching framework for these goals, and
they represent an urgent call for action by all countries, both developed and developing, in a
global partnership. The SDGs aim to end poverty, protect the planet, and ensure that humanity
enjoys peace and prosperity by the year 2030.

The 17 Sustainable Development Goals

The following are the 17 Sustainable Development Goals:

SDG 1: No Poverty
Aim: To end poverty in all its forms everywhere.
Focus: Eradicating extreme poverty and ensuring that all people have access to basic
services and social protection systems.

SDG 2: Zero Hunger

Aim: To end hunger and achieve food security by promoting sustainable agriculture,
improving nutrition, and ensuring access to sufficient and safe food for all, particularly
vulnerable populations.
Key Aspects:
Transforming food systems to be sustainable from production to consumption.
Ending rural poverty by doubling small-scale producer incomes and productivity.
Adapting food systems to eliminate loss or waste of food.
Ensuring adequate food and healthy diets for all people, all year round.
Ending malnutrition in all its forms.

Note: Malnutrition continues to threaten children and women worldwide. Preventing

malnutrition requires ensuring adequate maternal nutrition, promoting breastfeeding,
providing nutritious foods in early childhood, and creating a healthy environment with access
to basic health, water, hygiene, and sanitation services.

SDG 3: Good Health and Well-being

Aim: To ensure healthy lives and promote well-being for all at all ages.
Focus: Reducing maternal mortality rates, combating epidemics, and achieving universal
health coverage.
Challenges: The COVID-19 pandemic and ongoing crises have impeded progress. Childhood
vaccinations have declined, and deaths from tuberculosis and malaria have increased.
Increased investment in health systems is needed to support recovery and build resilience.
SDG 4: Quality Education
Aim: To ensure inclusive and equitable quality education and promote lifelong learning
opportunities for all.
Focus: Empowering individuals for the future through education.
Key Statistics: 617 million children and adolescents lack minimum proficiency in reading and
mathematics. 262 million children and adolescents remain out of school.
Requirements for Achievement: Education financing must be a national investment priority.
Measures include making education free and compulsory, increasing the number of teachers,
improving school infrastructure, and embracing digital transformation. Education helps
reduce inequalities and reach gender equality.

SDG 5: Gender Equality

Aim: To achieve gender equality and empower all women and girls.
Focus: Ending discrimination and violence against women and girls, and promoting their
participation in leadership and decision-making processes.
Impact: Achieving gender equality leads to skilled and employed youth, educated and healthy
children, empowered mothers, progressive nations, healthy families, and sustainable
communities.

SDG 6: Clean Water and Sanitation

Aim: To ensure availability and sustainable management of water and sanitation for all.
Focus: Ensuring universal access to safe drinking water, adequate sanitation, and hygiene,
while also protecting water-related ecosystems.
Challenge: Water scarcity affects more than 40% of the world's population.

SDG 7: Affordable and Clean Energy

Aim: To ensure access to affordable, reliable, sustainable, and modern energy for all.
Focus: Increasing the share of renewable energy sources and promoting international
cooperation in clean energy technology.
Requirements for Achievement: Accelerate electrification, increase investments in renewable
energy, improve energy efficiency, and develop enabling policies and regulatory frameworks.

SDG 8: Decent Work and Economic Growth

Aim: To promote sustained, inclusive, and sustainable economic growth, full and productive
employment, and decent work for all.
Focus: Promoting entrepreneurship, productive employment, and decent work conditions.
Challenge: One-fifth of young people are not in education, employment, or training. Achieving
this goal requires wholesale reform of the financial system, tackling rising debts and
economic uncertainty, and promoting equitable pay and decent work for young people.
Businesses must end exploitative labor practices.

SDG 9: Industry, Innovation, and Infrastructure

Aim: To build resilient infrastructure, promote inclusive and sustainable industrialization, and
foster innovation.
Focus: Ensuring that technological advancements benefit all sectors of society.
Requirements for Achievement: Support Least Developed Countries (LDCs), invest in
advanced technologies, lower carbon emissions, and increase mobile broadband access.

SDG 10: Reduced Inequalities

Aim: To reduce inequality within and among countries.
Focus: Ensuring equal opportunities for all people, regardless of background, and addressing
disparities in income, wealth, and access to resources.

SDG 11: Sustainable Cities and Communities

Aim: To make cities and human settlements inclusive, safe, resilient, and sustainable.
Focus: Creating sustainable urban environments that benefit all residents.

SDG 12: Responsible Consumption and Production

Aim: To promote sustainable consumption and production patterns.
Focus: Reducing waste and encouraging the efficient use of resources at every level.

SDG 13: Climate Action

Aim: To take urgent action to combat climate change and its impacts.
Focus: Reducing greenhouse gas emissions, increasing resilience to climate-related hazards,
and promoting climate-friendly practices.

SDG 14: Life Below Water

Aim: To conserve and sustainably use the oceans, seas, and marine resources for sustainable
development.
Focus: Reducing marine pollution, overfishing, and the destruction of marine ecosystems.

SDG 15: Life on Land

Aim: To protect, restore, and promote sustainable use of terrestrial ecosystems, sustainably
manage forests, combat desertification, and halt and reverse land degradation and
biodiversity loss.
Focus: Protecting forests, drylands, biodiversity, and combating deforestation and
desertification.

SDG 16: Peace, Justice, and Strong Institutions

Aim: To promote peaceful and inclusive societies for sustainable development, provide
access to justice for all, and build effective, accountable, and inclusive institutions at all
levels.
Focus: Ensuring peace, justice, and strong, transparent institutions.

SDG 17: Partnerships for the Goals

Aim: To strengthen the means of implementation and revitalize the global partnership for
sustainable development.
Focus: Encouraging global cooperation and multilateralism, involving governments, civil
society, the private sector, and other stakeholders.
