What is Java ?
Java is a high-level, object-oriented, platform-independent programming
language developed by Sun Microsystems in 1995. It is widely used for web
development, mobile apps, enterprise applications, and more.
History of Java
Developed By – James Gosling and team at Sun Microsystems
Developed In – 1991
First Name – Oak (later renamed to Java in 1995)
Development Purpose – Initially for embedded systems and set-top boxes
Official Release – 1995 as Java 1.0
History of Java
Key Feature – Platform Independence (Write Once, Run Anywhere - WORA)
First Major Update – JDK 1.2 (1998) introduced Swing and Collections Framework
Acquired By – Oracle Corporation in 2010
Java Editions – SE (Standard), EE (Enterprise), ME (Micro), FX (UI development)
Current Development – Java follows a 6-month release cycle for updates
Evolution of Java
📌 1991 – Developed by James Gosling and team at Sun Microsystems (originally called Oak).
📌 1995 – Renamed to Java and officially released.
📌 1996 – First stable version JDK 1.0 released.
📌 2004 – Java 5 introduced generics, enhanced for-loop.
📌 2010 – Oracle Corporation acquired Sun Microsystems.
📌 2017 – Java 9 introduced modular programming.
📌 2021-Present – Regular 6-month release cycle for new Java versions.
Features of Java
✅ Platform Independent – "Write Once, Run Anywhere" (WORA)
✅ Object-Oriented – Uses classes and objects
✅ Secure & Robust – Strong memory management and security features
✅ Multithreading – Supports concurrent execution
✅ Versatile – Used in web, mobile, and enterprise applications
Features of Java
🔹 Garbage Collection – Java manages memory automatically, cleaning up unused objects.
🔹 Rich API – Provides built-in libraries for networking, database handling, and utilities.
🔹 Portable – Code can run on different operating systems without modification.
🔹 High Performance – JIT (Just-In-Time) compiler improves execution speed.
🔹 Distributed Computing – Supports networking and remote method invocation (RMI).
Applications of Java
1. Desktop Applications – Eclipse, NetBeans, IntelliJ IDEA
2. Mobile Applications – Android apps (via Android Studio)
3. Web Development – Spring, JSP, Servlets
4. Enterprise Applications – Banking, CRM, ERP systems
5. Game Development – Minecraft, LibGDX framework
6. Cloud Computing – AWS, Google Cloud (Java-based services)
7. Internet of Things (IoT) – Smart devices, embedded systems
First Program in Java
First Program in Java
Explanation:
🔹 public class HelloWorld – Defines a class named HelloWorld.
🔹 public static void main(String[] args) – The main method, entry point of Java programs.
🔹 [Link]("Hello, World!"); – Prints "Hello, World!" to the console.
Basic Structure of Java Program
C++ vs Java
Aspect C++ Java
Platform Dependency Compiled to machine code (Platform-Dependent) Compiled to bytecode (Platform-Independent)
Memory Management Manual (pointers, new/delete) Automatic (Garbage Collection)
Multiple Inheritance Supports multiple inheritance Uses interfaces instead
Compilation & Execution Compiled using .exe Runs on JVM (Java Virtual Machine)
Operator Overloading Supports operator overloading Does not support operator overloading
Pointers Uses pointers No direct pointer access
