Sample Essay (Band 7–8)

It is often argued that children should learn how to become responsible members of society from their
parents, while others believe that schools are better suited for this role. This essay will discuss both
perspectives before presenting my own view.

On the one hand, parents play a crucial role in shaping a child’s behavior and values. From an early age,
children spend most of their time at home, where they learn basic manners, respect, and social norms.
For instance, parents teach children how to communicate politely, share with others, and develop
empathy. These early lessons form the foundation of a child’s character and strongly influence their
future behavior. Therefore, it is clear that parents are the first and most influential teachers in a child’s
life.

On the other hand, schools also have a significant responsibility in developing social behavior.
Educational institutions provide a structured environment where children interact with peers from
diverse backgrounds. This exposure helps them learn teamwork, cooperation, and discipline. Moreover,
schools often include moral education, group activities, and rules that encourage students to behave
responsibly. Teachers also act as role models, guiding students to understand the importance of fairness
and respect in society.

In my opinion, while both parents and schools play important roles, parents have a slightly greater
influence because they shape a child’s core values during the early stages of life. However, schools are
equally essential in reinforcing these values and preparing children to function effectively in a wider
social environment.

In conclusion, although schools provide valuable social learning opportunities, parents remain the
primary source of moral guidance. A combination of both is necessary to raise responsible members of
society.
