EEE 303: ELECTROMECHANICAL DEVICES
Tutorial One
Question_1
An electromagnet has a movable iron part and dimensions of magnetic circuit with uniform
cross section as shown in figure Q1. The core is made of ferromagnetic material with relative
permeability of 2200.
a) Calculate the magnetic reluctance of the circuit and the inductance of the main winding
b) Sketch the electric circuit equivalent to the magnetic circuit in figure 1 and determine
the air-gap flux, the flux density and the field intensity of the core and gap.
c) Because of a fault in the power supply, the exciting current is increased to 5A causing
the mobile element of the iron core to move to a zero gap position as a result of the
excessive electromagnetic force action. If this movement occurs in 0.01 seconds, find
the transient voltage induced in the test coil having two turns.
Question_2
In the magnetic circuit detailed in figure 2a with all dimensions in mm, calculate the required
current to be passed in the coil having 200 turns in order to establish a flux of 1.28 mWb in the
air gap. Neglect fringing effect and leakage flux. The B-H curve of the material is given in
figure 2b.

Question_3
A single-phase power system is shown in figure below. The power source feeds a 100 kVA
14/2.4 kV transformer through a feeder impedance of 40 + j 150 Ω. The transformer’s
equivalent series impedance referred to its low-voltage side is 0.12 + j 0.5 Ω. The load on the
transformer is 90 kW at 0.80 PF (power factor) lagging and 2300 V.
a) What is the voltage at the power source of the system?
b) What is the voltage regulation of the transformer?
c) How efficient is the overall power system?
