Activity 1 The usage of ‘insist’


How can we find and summarise the use pattern for the verb “insist”? Use the function of
Collocates on Corpus of Contemporary American English (COCA) to generate your
answers.
Activity 2 The usage of ‘lack’ and ‘despite’
Are “lack” and “despite” used correctly in the sentences below? Use the information you
gain from COCA of ‘lack’ and ‘despite’, and rewrite the sentences.
He is lack of money to further his study.
I still enjoyed the holiday despite of the poor weather.
More importantly, how do you use corpus data to explain to your students the accurate
use for each? Use the function of KWIC on COCA to generate results and conduct
analysis for answering the questions.

1. Both of the sentences are incorrect in terms of the word usage.


- In the first sentence the correct sentence would be He is in lack of money to further his
study.
- In the second sentence, the correct sentence would be I still enjoyed the holiday in
spite of/ despite the poor weather.
The search for these two entries in COCA show little proof for "despite of" and a verb
used directly in front of lack of. In this case, despite is classified as a preposition and lack
is classified as a noun.
Activity 3: The difference between ‘influence’ and ‘affect’
Use the function of Word, collocate and concordance of the Corpus of Contemporary
American (COCA) English to analyse and summarise how ‘influence’ and ‘affect’ are
different in terms of word frequency, collocation and semantic meanings.
• Step 1: Click on the “search” button in the navigation bar. This will open a page
with two boxes: the first one is for conducting searches and the second one is for
help.
• Step 2: Select “Word” at the top and write “influence” on the main input. Click
“see detailed info for word” to view the search results.
• Step3: Repeat the previous steps and write ‘affect’ on the main input. Click “see
detailed info for word” to view the search results.
