INTRODUCTION TO THE STUDY

In today’s fast-growing business world, every organization needs proper management of its
money and financial activities. Whether it is a small shop or a big company, all businesses deal
with income, expenses, profits, and losses. To manage all these things properly, accounting
plays a very important role. Accounting helps in recording all financial transactions in a
systematic way so that the business owner can clearly understand the financial position of the
business.

Accounting is often called the “language of business” because it communicates financial

information in a simple and understandable form. It helps different people like managers,
investors, banks, and government authorities to take important decisions. Without proper
accounting, it becomes very difficult to know whether a business is making profit or loss.

Along with accounting, taxation is also an important part of every business. Every individual
and business has to pay tax to the government according to the rules. In India, systems like
GST (Goods and Services Tax) and Income Tax are very important. These taxes are used by
the government for the development of the country such as building roads, schools, hospitals,
and other public services. Therefore, it is very necessary for businesses to follow tax rules
properly and file their returns on time.

This study is mainly focused on understanding how accounting and taxation work in real life,
especially in a Chartered Accountant (CA) firm. A CA firm is a place where professional
experts handle accounting, auditing, and taxation work for different clients. These firms
provide services like maintaining books of accounts, preparing financial statements, filing tax
returns, and giving financial advice. They help businesses in managing their financial work and
also ensure that all legal requirements are properly followed.

Earlier, accounting work was done manually in registers, which used to take a lot of time and
had more chances of mistakes. But now, with the help of technology, accounting has become
much easier and faster. Software like Tally is widely used for maintaining accounts. It helps in
recording transactions quickly, preparing reports automatically, and reducing errors. This has
made accounting more efficient and reliable.
Similarly, the introduction of GST in India has changed the taxation system completely. GST
has replaced many old taxes and created a single tax system across the country. It has made
taxation more transparent and organized. However, it also requires proper knowledge and
understanding of rules, which is why businesses often take help from Chartered Accountant
firms.

This study is based on the practical experience gained during my internship in a Chartered
Accountant firm. During the internship, I got the opportunity to learn many things practically.
I worked on maintaining records, preparing vouchers, and entering data in Tally software. I
also got basic knowledge about GST and Income Tax work. This experience helped me
understand how the theoretical concepts that we study in college are actually used in real life.

The main aim of this study is to connect theory with practical knowledge. In books, we learn
concepts, but in real life, we see how these concepts are applied. This study also helps in
improving skills like accuracy, time management, and responsibility, which are very important
in the accounting field.

Another important purpose of this study is to understand the role of taxation in business. If
businesses do not follow tax rules properly, they may face penalties and legal problems.
Chartered Accountant firms help businesses in avoiding such problems by guiding them and
handling their tax work properly.

During the internship, I also learned about the working environment of a professional office. I
observed how employees work together, complete their tasks on time, and maintain discipline
in their work. I also understood the importance of honesty and confidentiality while handling
financial data.

In conclusion, this study gives a clear idea about how accounting and taxation work in a real
business environment. It not only increases knowledge but also improves practical skills and
confidence. The experience gained from this study will be very helpful for my future career in
the field of accounting, finance, and taxation.
OBJECTIVES OF THE STUDY

The main objectives of this study are as follows:

• To learn the basic ideas and rules of accounting.

• To see how accounting works in a real CA (Chartered Accountant) firm.
• To understand bookkeeping and how financial records are made.
• To know how to record transactions using software like Tally.
• To learn about GST and how it is applied in real life.
• To get basic knowledge of Income Tax and how to file it.
• To understand how a CA firm works and what employees do.
• To gain practical skills and experience in accounting and taxation.
• To understand the basic concepts and principles of accounting.

SCOPE OF THE STUDY

This study is about learning how accounting and taxation really work in a Chartered
Accountant (CA) firm. It shows how money-related transactions are recorded, checked, and
kept safe, and how taxes are managed in real life.

It includes simple accounting tasks like making journal entries, posting in ledgers, preparing a
trial balance, and creating final accounts. I also learned how to use Tally software, which is
commonly used by businesses today.

The study also covers taxes like GST (Goods and Services Tax) and Income Tax. It explains
how different taxes work and how returns are filed, so we can understand how businesses
follow government rules.

During the internship, I also observed day-to-day activities like preparing vouchers, helping
with client work, maintaining documents, and keeping financial records. This gave me practical
experience of how a CA firm works.

The study is limited to what I learned and did during the internship. It mainly focuses on basic
and practical knowledge rather than covering every detail of accounting and taxation.
In short, this study helps to understand how accounting and taxes are handled in real life and
helps develop useful skills for a career in commerce and finance.

RESEARCH METHODOLOGY

Research methodology is the way we study and learn about a topic step by step. It tells how
information is collected, understood, and used. In this report, the focus is on learning how
accounting and taxation are done in a Chartered Accountant (CA) firm during my internship.
The main goal was to get practical experience and see how things work in a real office.

1. Nature of Research

This study is descriptive, which means it explains and describes how things are done in the
CA firm. The focus was on learning through observation and practice, not on testing any
theory. During the internship, I saw how daily accounting work is done, how financial records
are maintained, and how taxes are handled.

2. Purpose of Research

The study was done to:

• Learn how accounting rules are applied in real work.

• Understand how bookkeeping and financial records are prepared.
• See how accounting software like Tally is used.
• Learn about GST and Income Tax and how returns are filed.
• Understand how a CA firm works daily, including handling clients and office
documentation.

3. Sources of Information

I used two types of information sources:

Primary Data:

• Collected by watching office work and doing practical tasks.

• Tasks included preparing vouchers, posting entries, and using Tally.
• Talking with staff and professionals helped me understand their work and procedures.
Secondary Data:

• Collected from textbooks, reference books, websites, articles, and official documents
about GST and Income Tax.
• Helped support my practical learning with theory.

4. Methods of Data Collection

• Observation: Watching daily office work to learn how accounting tasks are done.
• Practical Work: Doing real tasks like entering data in Tally, preparing vouchers, and
helping in tax work.
• Discussion: Talking with staff and professionals to clear doubts and learn how things
are done.

5. Tools and Techniques Used

• Tally accounting software

• Preparing vouchers and maintaining financial records
• Simple analysis of data
• Using charts and tables wherever required

6. Period of Study

The study is based on the internship period, which gave enough practical experience in basic
accounting and taxation work.

7. Limitations of the Study

• The study was limited to a short internship period.

• Focused mainly on basic accounting and taxation practices.
• Confidential client data could not be accessed.
• The study is limited to one CA firm only.
8. Importance of the Study

This study is important because it connects theory with real work. It helps understand how
accounting and taxation are handled in real life and improves skills needed for a career in
commerce and finance.

INTRODUCTION TO ACCOUNTING
Accounting plays a very important role in every business organization. It is the process of
recording, classifying, summarizing, and interpreting financial transactions. Through

accounting, businesses can maintain accurate records of their financial activities and
understand their financial position.
According to the American Accounting Association.
“Accounting is the process of identifying, measuring, and communicating economic
information to permit informed judgments and decisions by users of the information.”

Accounting is the process of recording and maintaining financial transactions of a business in

a systematic manner. It helps businesses keep track of their income, expenses, assets, and
liabilities. Through accounting, organizations can understand their financial performance and
make better financial decisions.

In simple words, accounting helps a business know how much money it earns and how much
it spends. It also provides useful financial information to business owners, managers, investors,
and government authorities.

Accounting is often called the language of business because it communicates financial

information in a clear and organized way. Proper accounting helps businesses maintain
transparency, control their finances, and follow legal and taxation requirements

Accounting is very important for every business because it helps keep track of all money-
related activities in an organized way. It is the process of recording, organizing, summarizing,
and understanding financial transactions. Every business, whether big or small, deals with
money coming in from sales, money going out for expenses, money invested in assets, or
money owed to others. Without accounting, it would be very difficult for a business to know
how it is performing financially or to make important decisions.

In simple terms, accounting is like keeping a diary of all financial activities. It tells a business
how much money it is earning, how much it is spending, and what it owns or owes. This
information is very helpful not only for business owners but also for managers, investors, and
government authorities. It helps them understand the financial health of the business, make
informed decisions, and plan for the future.

Accounting is often called the language of business because it communicates financial

information clearly and systematically. Just like any language helps people communicate ideas,
accounting helps a business communicate its financial position. With proper accounting, a
business can maintain transparency, avoid mistakes, control finances efficiently, and follow
tax and legal rules properly.
Apart from recording transactions, accounting also helps in analyzing financial data.
Businesses can see which areas are profitable, which areas are losing money, and where
improvements are needed. It also helps in planning budgets, controlling costs, and making
financial strategies. For example, if a company notices that its expenses are growing faster than
its income, accounting helps managers take corrective actions on time.

In today’s world, accounting is not just done on paper—it is also computerized. Software like
Tally and other accounting programs help businesses record transactions faster, generate
reports, and maintain accurate financial statements. This makes accounting easier, faster, and
more reliable.

In short, accounting is much more than just keeping records of money. It is a tool that helps
businesses understand their financial situation, make smart decisions, and grow
successfully. Without accounting, businesses would not be able to plan for the future, manage
resources properly, or comply with legal and taxation requirements. Therefore, accounting is
an essential part of every organization and plays a key role in its success.

ACCOUNTING PRINCIPLES & CONCEPTS

Accounting works based on some important rules and ideas called principles and concepts.
These rules help businesses keep their financial information organized, accurate, and
reliable. Following these rules also makes it easier for business owners, managers, investors,
and other people to understand the financial health of the business.

Here are the main principles explained simply:

1. Business Entity Concept-A business is treated as separate from its owner. This means
all business transactions are recorded separately from personal transactions. It helps
show the true financial position of the business.
2. Going Concern Concept-This means we assume the business will continue to operate
for a long time and won’t close anytime soon. Because of this, assets are recorded at
their original cost rather than what they could be sold for if the business ended.
3. Accrual Concept-Income and expenses are recorded when they happen, not when
cash is received or paid. This ensures that financial statements show the real
performance of the business during a period.
4. Consistency Concept-The same accounting methods should be used every year. This
helps in comparing financial results over different periods easily.
5. Prudence (Conservatism) Concept-Businesses should record possible losses
immediately, but record profits only when they are certain. This avoids overstating
profits or assets.
6. Cost Concept-Assets are recorded at their original purchase cost, even if their market
value changes later. This keeps accounting simple and clear.
7. Matching Concept-Expenses should be recorded in the same period as the income
they help generate. This helps calculate the correct profit or loss for that period.
8. Dual Aspect Concept-Every transaction has two sides: debit and credit. For every
debit, there is an equal credit. This is the basis of the double-entry system and ensures
the accounts remain balanced.
9. Accounting Period Concept-The life of a business is divided into months or years.
This makes it easier to prepare financial statements and check the performance of the
business periodically.
10. Materiality Concept-Only important information that can affect decisions should be
recorded and reported. Small, insignificant details can be ignored.
11. Full Disclosure Concept-All important and relevant information must be shown in
financial statements. This ensures transparency and helps people make informed
decisions.

GOLDEN RULES OF ACCOUNTING

Three Golden Rules of Accounting

• Personal Account:
Debit the Receiver, Credit the Giver
• Real Account:
Debit What Comes In, Credit What Goes Out
• Nominal Account:
Debit All Expenses and Losses, Credit All Incomes and Gains

Examples

• Personal Account:
Ram gives cash → Ram A/c credited (Giver)
• Real Account:
Furniture purchased → Furniture A/c debited (Comes in)
• Nominal Account:
Salary paid → Salary A/c debited (Expense)

BOOKKEEPING SYSTEM

Bookkeeping is the basic process of recording all financial transactions of a business in a proper
and systematic way. It is the first step of accounting and helps in maintaining complete and
accurate records of daily business activities. Every business, whether small or large, needs a
good bookkeeping system to keep track of its income, expenses, assets, and liabilities.

In simple words, bookkeeping means writing down all the money-related transactions such as
sales, purchases, payments, and receipts. These records help the business owner to know how
much profit or loss the business is making and what its financial position is.

The bookkeeping process starts with recording transactions in the Journal, which is also
known as the book of original entry. In this book, all transactions are recorded in chronological
order with proper details. After recording in the journal, the transactions are transferred to the
Ledger, where similar types of accounts are grouped together. This helps in understanding the
balance of each account.
After posting all transactions to the ledger, a Trial Balance is prepared. The trial balance is a
statement that shows all debit and credit balances of different accounts. It helps in checking
whether the books of accounts are accurate and balanced or not.

There are two main systems of bookkeeping:

• Single Entry System: This is a simple method where only one side of the transaction
is recorded. It is mostly used by small businesses.
• Double Entry System: In this system, every transaction has two aspects — debit and
credit. This system is more reliable and widely used because it helps in detecting
errors and maintaining accuracy.

Nowadays, bookkeeping is mostly done using computerized systems like Tally, which make
the process faster, easier, and more accurate. It also helps in generating reports quickly and
maintaining proper records without much manual effort.
In conclusion, bookkeeping is an essential part of accounting that helps businesses in
maintaining proper financial records. It provides a strong base for preparing financial
statements and making better financial decisions.

VOUCHER SYSTEM

A voucher system is an important part of accounting that helps in recording and verifying
financial transactions of a business. A voucher is a written document or proof that supports a
transaction. It acts as evidence that a particular transaction has taken place and is recorded in
the books of accounts.

In simple terms, whenever any financial transaction occurs in a business, it must be supported
by a voucher. These vouchers help in maintaining accuracy and transparency in accounting
records. They are also useful during auditing, as auditors check vouchers to verify the
correctness of transactions.

There are different types of vouchers used in accounting:

that all entries are supported by valid documents. It plays a crucial role in preventing fraud and
maintaining discipline in accounting practices.

In conclusion, the voucher system is a reliable method for recording and verifying business
transactions. It provides a strong foundation for accurate bookkeeping and financial reporting.

TALLY SOFTWARE OVERVIEW

Tally is one of the most popular accounting software used by businesses for maintaining
financial records in a simple and efficient way. It is widely used by accountants, companies,
and Chartered Accountant firms for performing various accounting tasks such as recording
transactions, preparing financial statements, and managing taxation.

Tally helps in maintaining computerized accounts, which reduces manual work and minimizes
errors. It is user-friendly and allows users to record transactions quickly using different types
of vouchers. The software provides accurate and real-time information about the financial
position of the business.

One of the main features of Tally is company creation, where details of the business are
entered to start maintaining accounts. After creating a company, users can create different
ledger accounts such as cash, bank, sales, purchases, expenses, and income accounts. These
ledgers are used to record financial transactions properly.

Tally uses a voucher entry system to record transactions. Different types of vouchers are
available in Tally, such as payment voucher, receipt voucher, sales voucher, purchase voucher,
and journal voucher. Each voucher type is used for a specific kind of transaction, making the
process organized and systematic.

Another important feature of Tally is GST accounting. It allows businesses to record GST
transactions and generate GST reports easily. Tally helps in calculating tax automatically and
preparing GST returns, which saves time and ensures compliance with tax laws.
Tally also provides various reports such as trial balance, profit and loss account, balance sheet,
and cash flow statement. These reports help management in analyzing the financial
performance of the business and making better decisions.

In addition, Tally ensures data security and allows backup of records, which is important for
maintaining financial data safely. It also supports multi-user access, which means multiple
users can work on the same data at the same time.

In conclusion, Tally is a powerful and reliable accounting software that simplifies accounting
and taxation work. It plays an important role in modern business by improving efficiency,
accuracy, and financial management.

GOODS AND SERVICES TAX (GST)

1. Introduction to GST

Goods and Services Tax (GST) is an indirect tax that

has replaced multiple indirect taxes such as VAT,
Service Tax, Excise Duty, etc. It was introduced in
India on 1st July 2017 with the objective of creating
a unified tax system across the country. GST is a
comprehensive, multi-stage, and destination-based
tax that is levied on the supply of goods and services.

GST has simplified the taxation system by removing the cascading effect of taxes, which means
tax on tax is eliminated. It has made the tax system more transparent, efficient, and easy to
manage for both businesses and the government.

2. Objectives of GST

The main objectives of GST are:

• To simplify the indirect tax structure
• To eliminate multiple taxes and create a single tax system
• To reduce the cascading effect of taxes
• To increase transparency in the taxation system
• To promote ease of doing business
• To increase tax compliance and revenue collection

3. Features of GST

GST has several important features that make it different from the previous tax system:

• One Nation, One Tax: GST has created a unified tax structure across India.
• Destination-Based Tax: Tax is collected at the place where goods or services are
consumed.
• Input Tax Credit (ITC): Businesses can claim credit for the tax paid on purchases.
• Online System: All GST processes such as registration, return filing, and payment
are done online.
• Multi-Stage Tax: GST is applied at every stage of the supply chain.

4. Types of GST

There are mainly four types of GST in India:

• CGST (Central Goods and Services Tax): Collected by the Central Government on
intra-state transactions.
• SGST (State Goods and Services Tax): Collected by the State Government on intra-
state transactions.
• IGST (Integrated Goods and Services Tax): Collected by the Central Government
on inter-state transactions.
• UTGST (Union Territory GST): Applicable in Union Territories.

5. GST Registration

GST registration is mandatory for businesses whose turnover exceeds the prescribed limit.
After registration, a unique GSTIN (Goods and Services Tax Identification Number) is
provided.
Process of GST Registration:

• Visit GST portal

• Fill registration form
• Upload required documents
• Verification and approval
• GSTIN is issued

6. Input Tax Credit (ITC)

Input Tax Credit is one of the most important features of GST. It allows businesses to reduce
their tax liability by claiming credit for the tax paid on purchases.

Conditions for claiming ITC:

• Possession of valid tax invoice

• Goods or services must be received
• Tax must be paid to the government
• Return must be filed

7. GST Return Filing

GST return filing is a process of submitting details of sales, purchases, and tax payments to the
government.

Common GST Returns:

• GSTR-1: Details of outward supplies

• GSTR-3B: Summary return with tax payment
• GSTR-9: Annual return

Importance of GST Filing:

• Ensures legal compliance

• Maintains proper records
8. Advantages of GST

GST has provided many benefits to businesses and the economy:
