Chapter -2 Lost spring


1. What is Saheb looking for in the garbage dumps? Where is he and where has
he come from?
Ans. = Saheb is looking for (gold) useful items like plastic, coins, or anything
valuable in the garbage dumps that can help him earn money. He is in Seemapuri, a
slum on the outskirts of Delhi. He has come from Dhaka (Bangladesh), where his family
left their home due to storms and poverty.
2. What explanation does the author offered for the children not wearing footwear ?
Ans. = The author gives two explanations for children not wearing footwear. One
explanation is that it is a tradition for them to remain barefoot, and even if they are
given shoes, they may throw them away. However, the author believes that this is only
an excuse to hide their poverty. In reality, the main reason is that they cannot afford
shoes, which shows their continuous state of poverty.
3. Is Saheb happy working at the tea-stall? Explain.
Ans. = No, Saheb is not happy working at the tea-stall. Earlier, as a ragpicker, he
had freedom despite poverty. But at the tea-stall, he is burdened with responsibility.
The author notices that his face has lost its carefree look, showing that he is unhappy
and trapped.

Ans. = Firozabad is famous for its glass bangle industry. It is known as the centre of
India's bangles, where many families have been involved in banglemaking for
generations.
5. Mention the hazards of working in the glass bangles industry.
Ans. = The bangle makers face many problems while working in the glass- blowing
industry. They have to work with furnaces with high temperature in dark dingy cells
without proper facility of air and light. The dust from polishing the bangles is injurious
to eyes. The people, especially children working in the industry often lose their eyesight
before they become adults. Their eyes are more adjusted to the dark than to the light
outside. Apart from that people also suffer from lung and heart diseases later in their
lives after working at fhe hot environment.
6. How is Mukesh's attitude to his situation different from that of his family?
Ans. = Mukesh is different because he dreams of becoming a motor mechanic
and wants to break free from the family tradition of bangle-making. Unlike his family,
who have accepted their fate, Mukesh shows courage and determination to change his
life.
7. What was Saheb's full name and what was the meaning of his name?(Board exam

Ans. = Saheb's full name was Saheb-e-Alam, which means "lord of the universe." The
meaning is ironic because he lives in poverty and works as a ragpicker.

losing his eyesight. This belief shows how deeply rooted traditions and poverty make
them accept their condition without trying to escape it.
