1-a) Explain the performance of synchronous machine when connected to an
infinite bus-bars.
1-b)13.8 kV, 10MVA, 0.8-PF-lagging 60Hz 2-pole Y-con. Steam-turbine
synchronous generator has synchronous reactance 12 Ω/phase and armature
resistance 1.5 Ω/phase. This generator is operating in parallel with large power
system (infinite bus).
a) What is the magnitude of E and torque angle of this generator at rated
conditions
b) If the field current is constant, what is the maximum power possible out of
this generator? How much reserve power or torque has at full load?
c) At absolute maximum power possible, how much reactive power will this
generator to be supplying or consuming? Sketch the corresponding
diagram.(assume If is still unchanged)
2-a) what is the voltage regulation? Explain with aided sketches three deferent
methods for determination the voltage regulation. under what loading condition
can voltage regulation be negative? Dose the terminal voltage increase or
decrease when the load is removed for positive regulation?
2-b) A 6.6 KV industrial plant has the following two induction motor drives and
a main transformer for the other plant .
Ind. motor A Ind. motor B Transformer
rated output (KW) 100 200 300
full- load efficiency 94% 95% 99%
full- load power factor 0.91 0.93 0.98 lagging
A star connected synchronous machine rated at 250 KVA is to be installed and so
controlled that when all the equipment is working at full rating , the overall
power factor will be unity . At the same time ,the synchronous machine is to
draw rated current and deliver as much mechanical power as possible within its
current rating . If its efficiency can be taken as 96% and its synchronous
impedance 0+j100 ohm, calculate the required e.m.f behind synchronous
impedance to sustain this condition.
As alternative strategy , consider what rating of synchronous machine operating
the same motoring load, would be required to bring the overall works power
factor to 0.95 leading.
3-a) List all the conditions that must be fulfilled before one alternator can be
connected in parallel with another.
3-b) Two single-phase generators are connected in parallel, and the excitation of
each machine is such as to generate an open-circuit emf of 3500 V. The stator

winding machine has synchronous reactance of 30 ohms and negligible
resistance. If there a phase displacement of 40 electrical degrees between the
emf’s, calculate:
a-) the current circulating between the two machines,
b-) the terminal voltage, and
c-) the power supplied (kW) from one machine to the other.
Assume that there is no external load. Sketch the phasor diagram.
4-a) Derive an expression for developed power for a cylindrical rotor
synchronous machine with aided of phasor diagram and taking into account the
armature-winding resistance, and prove that the maximum power angle equal to
power factor angle.
4-b) The magnetization curve of a 400 V 50 Hz alternator is given by the
following readings:
Open circuit, Volts: 266 334 377 422 450 484 508
Field current:A 2 2.5 3 3.5 4 4.5 5
Full - load current is obtained by 2A excitation on short-circuit. Calculate the
percentage regulation at .8 PF lagging.
