How to Write a Sports Article (With Examples)

A sports article reports what happened in a game or competition. It usually includes a headline, a short
lead paragraph with the basic information, details about the game, and a conclusion.

Example 1: Basketball

Grade 10 Tigers Win Basketball Championship

The Grade 10 Tigers secured the championship title after defeating the Grade 9 Warriors with a score
of 78–65 during the Intramurals basketball finals on Friday at the school gymnasium.

The Tigers showed strong teamwork and defense throughout the game. In the first half, the Warriors
managed to keep the score close, but the Tigers pulled ahead in the third quarter.

Team captain Mark Santos led the team with 22 points, while point guard Luis Ramos contributed
several assists that helped maintain their lead.

“We practiced hard for this game, and we’re proud of our teamwork,” Santos said after the match.

With this victory, the Grade 10 Tigers were officially crowned the Intramurals Basketball Champions for
the year.

Example 2: Volleyball

Blue Spikers Triumph in Volleyball Match

The Blue Spikers defeated the Red Dragons in a thrilling volleyball match held on Thursday at the
school court.

Both teams displayed impressive skills, but the Blue Spikers dominated the final set with powerful
spikes and solid defense. Team player Anna Cruz scored the winning point that secured the victory.

The match ended with a final score of 3–1, giving the Blue Spikers their second win in the tournament.
