Debate for Midterm

Hello Honorable speaker and everyone, I am Abrar Murshed from the opposing team. Today, as
the third speaker, I will be discussing how old nursing homes are not the most ideal places for
any senior citizen. If someone considers placing their elderly loved ones in a nursing home,
there are lots of things to consider, especially their well-being. Many believe that nursing homes
are the solution to keeping their elderly loved ones properly medicated and safe as everyone
cannot look after their family for the whole day. But Honorable speaker, the point I’m going to be
making is that nursing homes are often understaffed and partly profit-driven. According to a
report from WHO (World Health Organization), 12% of nursing home staff members reported
neglecting the needs of residents. Nearly 12% of residents or their families also reported cases
of nursing home neglect in the same study. Most nursing homes are understaffed at such levels
that they are unable to provide quality care to nursing home residents. Due to being
understaffed, employees who are stressed or overworked may not also be able to provide the
quality of attention needed to keep residents healthy and properly medicated. Because of this
understaffing, and employees not showing up sometimes, the people that do show up to work
are mandated to stay over and work double shifts, to make up for the lost staff. And then,
because of the mandation, the good staff get tired of working doubles and end up leaving. This
leads to neglecting the residents basic living needs such as- food, water or bathing. In
conclusion, Honorable speaker, home health care is ultimately the best option unless the citizen
is severely ill and needs proper medical attention every now and then because people who don't
fit in those categories of need tend to be happier, healthier, and more socially active in less
restrictive environments. Thank you for your time.
