Question 1 (Queuing theory applications for merging traffic)
The number of vehicles (in 15-minute intervals) merging into and travelling on the expressway
prior to the merge are given in the table below. If the capacity of the expressway is 4000 vph,
determine the queues formed.

Question 2 (Queuing theory applications in public transport)
The number of passengers and the number of taxis arriving at a taxi stand at 5-minute intervals
are given below. Assume that each taxi serves only one passenger and that initially there was
no queue, determine:
(i) The passenger queue at the end of each interval
(ii) The average waiting time of the passengers
(iii) The average waiting time of the taxis

Question 3 (Signalized intersection using D/D/1 queuing model)
The saturation flow rate for a pre-timed signalized intersection approach is 3600 vph. At the
beginning of the cycle (effective red), no vehicles are queued. The signal is timed so that when
the queue (from continuously arriving vehicles) is 13 vehicles long, the effective green begins.
If the queue dissipates 8 seconds before the end of the cycle and the cycle length is 60 seconds,
what is the arrival rate assuming a D/D/1 queuing?
