Tutorial-10
1. Classify the Leptons and Hadrons according to
2. their generations. Name the fundamental gauge Bosons involved in standard model.
3. Determine the range of weak interaction responsible for the reaction 𝑛 → 𝑝 + 𝛽 − + 𝜈 −
using the mass of 𝑊 − to be 80.4 𝐺𝑒𝑉⁄𝑐 2. Also confirm that lifetime of neutron is larger
than the decay time through weak interaction.
4. Draw the Baryon Octet, Baryon Decuplet and Meson Octet. Discuss the significance of
these structures.
5. Using Gell-Mann_Nishijima formaula, identify the particle, its strangeness S and the
hypercharge Y if the elementary particle is neutral and the isotopic spin project (𝐼3 ) is
1
and baryon number is +1.
2
6. If we ignore the small mass difference within the isospin multiplets, there are only four
distinct masses in the baryon octet: the mass of the nucleon doublet
(𝑚𝑛 ), Σ 𝑡𝑟𝑖𝑝𝑙𝑒𝑡 (𝑚Σ ), Λ 𝑠𝑖𝑛𝑔𝑙𝑒𝑡 (𝑚Λ ) 𝑎𝑛𝑑 Ξ 𝑑𝑜𝑢𝑏𝑙𝑒𝑡 (𝑚Ξ ). According to the
Eightfold way, these masses obey the following Gellman-Okubo mass
1
formula: 𝑚𝑎 = 𝑚0 + 𝑚1 𝑌 + 𝑚2 [𝐼(𝐼 + 1) − 4𝑌 2 ] , Where, a represent 𝑛, Σ, Λ 𝑜𝑟 Ξ; I is the
corresponding isospin quantum number; Y the hypercharge and 𝑚0 , 𝑚1 𝑎𝑛𝑑 𝑚2 are
1
constants. Show that this mass formula implies 𝑚𝑛 + 𝑚Ξ = 2 (3𝑚Λ + 𝑚Σ ).
7. From the mass formula of the decuplet 𝑚Δ − 𝑚Σ = 𝑚Σ − 𝑚Ξ = 𝑚Ξ − 𝑚Ω , calculate
the mass of Ω− particle.
1
8. Using Gellman Okuba mass formula implies 𝑚𝑛 + 𝑚Ξ = 2 (3𝑚Λ + 𝑚Σ ). Estimate the
mass of 𝑚Λ .
9. Using the formula in problem number 5 and analogy of 6, obtain the mass of 𝑚Λ .
10. ∆++ has a resonance peak with full width of Γ = 120 𝑀𝑒𝑉. How far on an average would
such particle of energy 200 GeV travel before decaying?
11. Which of the following process is forbidden by law of conservations
i. 𝑛 → 𝑝 + 𝛽 − + 𝜈𝑒
ii. 𝜇− → 𝛽− + 𝛾
iii. 𝜏 − → 𝛽− + 𝛾
iv. 𝜋 + + 𝑛 → Λ0 + 𝐾 +
v. 𝜈̅𝑒 + 𝑝 → 𝑛 + 𝜇 +
12. 𝐾 + particle decays to 𝜇 + 𝑎𝑛𝑑 𝜈𝜇 .
𝐾 + → 𝜇 + + 𝜈𝜇
If the particle 𝐾 + is at rest and if the masses of the particles are 𝑀(𝐾 + ) =
500 𝑀𝑒𝑉⁄𝑐 2 , 𝑀(𝜇 + ) = 100 𝑀𝑒𝑉⁄𝑐 2 𝑎𝑛𝑑 𝑀(𝜈) = 0, then using the relativistic energy
and momentum conservation, calculate the energy of 𝜇 + 𝑎𝑛𝑑 𝜈𝜇 .
