Week 2. In this module you will learn the easy way
to subtract numbers mentally. Study it carefully, it
will guide you in giving the difference of two
numbers quickly and accurately.

II. Objectives

Subtract mentally 1-digit numbers from 1-to 3-digit

numbers without regrouping using appropriate
strategies.

III. Vocabulary List

Subtract mentally – means to subtract numbers in

mind.
Regrouping – means carrying and barrowing.
Rename – means to break the 3-
digit number into three parts or to write the number
in expanded form.
 345 will be renamed as 300 + 40 + 5

IV. Pre Test

Subtract mentally.
1. 207 – 5 = _______
2. 315 – 5 = _______
3. 418 – 6 = _______
Page | 1
4. 218 - ____ = 112
5. What number is 288 less 5?

V. Learning Activities

The fastest way to subtract 1 digit number from 1 -

to 3 - digit numbers without regrouping is to
rename or break the numbers, subtract the ones
and add the difference.

Example 1: 154 - 4= ______

Subtract by breaking the numbers in three parts.

159 = 100 + 50 + 9
-4= 4
100 + 50 + 5 = 155

Example 2:

What number is 356 less 5 =________

356 = 300 + 50 + 6
-5= 5
300 + 50 + 1 = 351

Example 3:

What is the difference between 8 and 269?

269 = 200 + 60 + 9
-8= 8
200 + 60 + 1 = 261
Page | 2
Example 4:

What is 575 decreased by 4?

575 = 500 + 70 + 5
-4= 4
500 + 70 + 1 = 571

Example 5:

What is 276 minus 4?

276 = 200 + 70 + 6
-4= 4
200 + 70 + 2 = 272

Example 6:

What is 7 subtracted from 968

968 = 900 + 60 + 8
-7= 7
900 + 60 + 1 = 961

Study the problem below.

There are 215 fish in the fishpond, 3 of them died.

How many fish were left?

Solve the problem by breaking the numbers in three

parts.
215 = 200 + 10 + 5
-3= 3
Page | 3
200 + 10 + 2 = 212
