Case Study: Sunita's doctor needs to examine the inside of her ear. He uses a small concave mirror attached
to a headband, positions a light source at the focus, and directs the reflected beam into the ear canal.

(i) Why does the doctor use a concave mirror and not a plane mirror?
(ii) What is the nature of the beam produced when the source is at the focus of a concave mirror?
(iii) If the focal length is 2 cm and the source is at the focus, where do reflected rays go? Verify using mirror
formula.

Case Study: Rahul placed a candle 30 cm in front of a concave mirror. He obtained a sharp image of the
candle on a screen kept 30 cm in front of the mirror on the same side.

(i) Calculate the focal length of the mirror.


(ii) What is the magnification? What does its negative sign indicate?
(iii) If Rahul moves the candle closer (between C and F), what will happen to the image? Explain.

You are a scientist designing a solar cooker using a large spherical mirror to concentrate sunlight.
(i) Which type of mirror will you use and why? Draw its ray diagram for parallel incident rays.
(ii) If the radius of curvature of the mirror is 60 cm, where should the cooking vessel be placed?
(iii) Design one improvement to make the solar cooker more efficient. Explain the physics behind it.
(iv) What will happen if a convex mirror is used instead? Justify your answer.
