Class10 Life Processes Notes

The document outlines the essential life processes of living organisms, including nutrition, respiration, transportation, and excretion. It explains the types of nutrition (autotrophic and heterotrophic), the processes of respiration, and the roles of transportation and excretion in both plants and humans. Additionally, it addresses important questions related to diffusion, stomata, and the necessity of transport systems.

Class 10 Science - Life Processes Notes

1. Life Processes

Life processes are the basic functions performed by living organisms to maintain life. These include
nutrition, respiration, transportation, and excretion.

2. Nutrition

Nutrition is the process by which organisms obtain and utilize food.

Types of Nutrition:

• Autotrophic Nutrition: Plants prepare their own food using sunlight (photosynthesis).

• Heterotrophic Nutrition: Organisms depend on others for food (humans, animals).

Photosynthesis

Process by which green plants make food using carbon dioxide, water, and sunlight in presence of
chlorophyll.

3. Respiration

Respiration is the process of breaking down food to release energy.

Types:

• Aerobic Respiration (with oxygen)

• Anaerobic Respiration (without oxygen)

4. Transportation

Transportation is the movement of materials in organisms.

In plants: Xylem transports water, phloem transports food.

In humans: Blood circulates oxygen, nutrients, and waste.

5. Excretion

Excretion is the removal of waste products from the body.

In humans: Kidneys filter blood and form urine.

6. Important Questions & Answers

Q1. Why is diffusion insufficient in multicellular organisms?

Ans: Because cells are far from environment and diffusion is too slow to meet needs.

Q2. What is the role of stomata?

Ans: Stomata help in gas exchange and transpiration in plants.

Q3. Why is the transport system needed?

Ans: To carry nutrients, oxygen, and remove waste efficiently.
